EXAMINING EFFICIENCY UNDER MULTI-CROPPING SYSTEMS AgEcon
Ogunyinka, Ebenezer; Odeh, Oluwarotimi O.; Ajibefun, Igbekele A..
This paper computes overall efficiency for 64 farmers practicing multi-cropping system in Ekiti State of Nigeria. These are decomposed into pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency. Results show that 34 and 40 farmers are technically and scale inefficient, respectively. Overall, 40 farmers are found to be inefficient.

DETERMINANTS OF TECHNICAL INEFFICIENCY IN FARM PRODUCTION: THE CASE OF NDE FARMERS IN ONDO STATE, NIGERIA AgEcon
Ogunyinka, Ebenezer; Ajibefun, Igbekele A..
The study estimates the determinants of technical inefficiency among the farmers that are participating in the Ondo State chapter of the National Directorate of Employment program in Nigeria. Using a tobit analysis, it was found that extension visits, higher education, land input and membership of farm association were significant factors influencing technical efficiency. This suggests that education, efficiency in supply of inputs and public awareness are key factors necessary for policy consideration.

TESTING SEPARABILITY IN A GENERALIZED ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL DEMAND SYSTEM: THE CASE OF NIGERIAN DEMAND FOR MEAT AgEcon
Ogunyinka, Ebenezer; Marsh, Thomas L..
This study investigates consumer demand for meat products in Nigeria and tests if any of the meat products are separable from one another. Estimating a generalized nested demand system, the Rotterdam model was selected using an adjusted likelihood ratio test. Results indicate that mutton and pork are more elastic than beef and poultry. Only pork was found to be separable from other meat types.

OPTIMAL DIETARY BLENDING FOR HOUSEHOLD FOOD SECURITY IN SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA: LESSONS FROM PUBLISHED DATA AgEcon
Ogunyinka, Ebenezer; Norman, David W..
The study estimates the optimal dietary intake of Lagos State residents. Analysis of the available data indicates over-consumption of all nutrients which suggests that the common nutrition related health problems in Lagos State could be attributed to excessive nutrient in-take. Consumption at the optimal level would ensure adequate nutrients at a cost within people's income limitations. The results however revealed the inadequacies of using published data for the analysis. An independent diet recall survey is therefore recommended.

ON THE CHOICE OF FUNCTIONAL FORMS IN THE MEASUREMENT OF SCALE AND SCOPE ECONOMIES: GENERALIZED BOX-COX AND COMPOSITE COST FUNCTIONS AgEcon
Ogunyinka, Ebenezer; Featherstone, Allen M..
This paper estimates and compares generalized Box-Cox and composite cost functions to identify scale and scope economies. The robustness of the outcomes to different functional specifications was examined. Increasing returns to scale was common for product-specific and the overall measures. Generalized Leontief and composite forms yielded more robust elasticity, scale and scope measures. The generalized Box-Cox model was selected as the appropriate functional form as all the special cases were rejected.

EXAMINING CROSS-COUNTRY AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY DIFFERENCES AgEcon
Ogunyinka, Ebenezer; Langemeier, Michael R..
This paper computes Malmquist agricultural productivity indexes for 125 countries over the period 1961-2001. These are decomposed into efficiency change (i.e., pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency changes) and technical change (i.e., input bias and magnitude components). Results show that developing and developed countries derive their growth from efficiency change and technical change, respectively. Input bias technical change is evident for both developing and developed countries.
