Risk aversion and sustainable maize production in Nigeria: Some challenges and prospects for agricultural and economic development AgEcon

This paper determines the degree or extent of farmer’s risk aversion that affects sustainable maize production in Northern Nigeria. Using a ridge regression analysis, a measure of risk aversion was derived for each individual farmer in a model of safety-first behaviour from a cross-sectional survey of 350 maize producers in northern Nigeria. The distribution of the degree of risk aversion shows a high skewness towards the risk averters (high risk farmers) and centered around 1.20, and standard deviation of 0.37. This distribution is then explained by a set of specific variables that characterize the farmers’ behaviour in the study area using a Tobit model. Economic Perspectives of the Diversity of Risks among Crop Farmers in the Northern Guinea Savanna of Nigeria AgEcon

In this paper, we examine the diversity of risks that affect farming in the Northern Guinea Savanna of Nigeria. We also investigate the perspectives of these risks in relation to their economic implications on the farming enterprises. We also show that through reorganization of these risks, some derived factors have the ability to present themselves whether as corresponding to existing categorization of the variables or not and also to enable us know which of the factors is more important than the other. Gross margin and factor analytical methods were used in computing the estimated results on a cross sectional sample of 348 farming households. Adoption of and farmers’ exposure to soil and Water Management (SWMGT) Practices in the Sahel Savanna of West Africa: Average Treatment Effect (ATE) Estimations. AgEcon

This paper approaches the soil and water management (SWMGT) adoption estimation from the perspective of the modern evaluation theory. As a result, the analytical procedure adopted for the study follows the Average Treatment Effect (ATE) estimation framework. The data gathered for the analysis are part of the baseline data collected from a sample of 572 households in 20 villages in Maradi (Niger Republic) and katsina (Nigeria). Results show that about 45 percent of the respondents have adopted the soil and water management (SWMGT) practices, out of 398 (70%) households that had knowledge or were aware of the SWMGT options.
