The phylogeny and biogeography of the western Palaearctic species of Nephrotoma are analyzed. Phylogeny is dealt with in a cladistic sense. Briefly outlined are criteria developed for polarity decisions as well as the rôle assigned to parallelisms. Representatives of fourty-one Holarctic (sub)genera were examined in order to establish the sistergroup of Nephrotoma. The internal hypopygial stuctures of these taxa are discussed and the following cluster of closely related taxa is recognized: Dolichopeza s. str., Oropeza, Nesopeza, Prionocera, Trichotipula, and Scamboneura, Nephrotoma. The two last-mentioned taxa are considered sistergroups. The western Palaearctic Nephrotoma species are assigned here to four monophyletic groups: cornicina group, dorsalis... |

Part 1 of this study deals with the western palaearctic species of the cornicina group (Savchenko, 1973b). For each taxon the references, type-material, material examined, description, biology and distribution are presented and discussed. Six taxa are new to science (lempkei, appendiculata pertenua, theowaldi, fontana, exastigma and sardegniensis), one is redefined (astigma) and one is given a new status (surcoufi). The females of beckeri, saccai, forcipata and schaeuffelei are described for the first time. Thirty-seven names are known in the literature for twenty-six taxa discussed. |

This study deals with the dorsalis group and the brevipennis group. The western palaearctic members of the dorsalis group are N. dorsalis dorsalis (Fabricius, 1781), N. quadristriata (Schummel, 1833), N. lunulicornis lunulicornis (Schummel, 1833), N. scurra (Meigen, 1818), N. austriaca (Mannheims & Theowald, 1959), and N. helvetica (Mannheims & Theowald, 1959). The eastern palaearctic subspecies dorsalis sachalina Alexander, 1924, and lunulicornis angustistria Alexander, 1925, are briefly discussed. A description is provided of N. profunda Alexander, 1935, formerly treated as a subspecies of scurra. The brevipennis group assembles the Nephrotoma species from Madeira, N. brevipennis (Wollaston, 1858), N. lucida (Schiner, 1868), and N. antithrix... |

Seventeen nearctic species of Nephrotoma are revised. They are assigned to seven species-groups. Together with the 20 species of the dorsalis-group (Tangelder, 1983), this covers all the nearctic Nephrotoma species. Presented here for every species are: literature, type-material, synonyms, description with figures for most genital characters, biology and distribution. For the species-groups, it is indicated to which palaearctic species-groups they belong. For the species, the closely related palaearctic species are mentioned. This information is summarized in fig. 1. The species, with their synonyms and distribution are summarized in table 1. The species subalterna, byersi, and tealei are described for the first time. |

Part 2 of this study deals with the western palaearctic species of the crocata group: N. crocata (Linnaeus, 1758), N. scalaris (Meigen, 1818), N. rossica (Riedel, 1910), N. pratensis (Linnaeus, 1758), N. croceiventris (Strobl, 1909), and N. nox (Riedel, 1910). Subspecific ranking is undertaken in N. crocata (subsp. luteata Meigen, 1818, status nov.), N. scalaris (subsp. terminalis Wiedemann, 1830, as senior synonym of parvinotata Brunetti, 1918, and bispinosa Alexander, 1925), N. pratensis (eepi subsp. nov.), and N. croceiventris (subsp. lindneri Mannheims, 1951, status nov.). |

Part 4 is the final part of a revision of the western palaearctic Nephrotoma species. A key to these species is presented. Discussed are the species N. analis (Schummel, 1833), N. euchroma (Mik, 1874), N. subanalis (Mannheims, 1951), N. semiflava (Strobl, 1909), N. lamellata (Riedel, 1910), N. flavipalpis (Meigen, 1830), N. malickyi Martinovský, 1979, N. alluaudi (Pierre, 1921), N. eugeniae (Savchenko, 1957), N. lundbecki (Nielsen, 1907), and N. ramulifera Tjeder, 1955. Furthermore four species erroneously referred to Nephrotoma, or recorded thus from the western palaearctic are discussed. |
