Composition, Abundance and Seasonality of Zooplankton in Mida Creek, Kenya OceanDocs
Osore, M.; Mwaluma, J.; Kamau, J.; Wawiye, P..
Samples were collected monthly at four fixed stations in Mida creek from May 1996 to April 1997, in order to determine the species composition, abundance and diversity of phytoplankton and zooplankton collected with 20- and 332-mm mesh size plankton nets respectively. Sampling also included measurement of salinity and temperature. Peaks in phytoplankton abundance occurred in May and January, following the long rains in April–May and the short rains in November–December. Zooplankton densities followed the phytoplankton peaks with the main peak occurring in February after the major phytoplankton bloom. Similarly, smaller peaks occurred in May and March. Copepods dominated the zooplankton forming up to 60% of total species composition. High zooplankton...

Copepod composition, abundance and diversity in Makupa Creek, Mombasa, Kenya OceanDocs
Osore, M.; Fiers, F.; Daro, M.H..
The taxonomic composition, abundance and spatio-temporal distribution of copepods were analysed from monthly zooplankton samples collected in Makupa creek and Mombasa Harbour (Makupa creek was until recently subjected to considerable dumping of domestic and industrial waste). At least 51 copepod species belonging to 38 genera in the families Calanoida (25), Harpacticoida (5), Poecilostomatoida (7) and Cyclopoida (1) were identified. The most common genera were Acartia, Acrocalanus, Corycaeus, Oncaea and Oithona. Copepods bloomed in the wet months of November and April (75 to 158/m3). Abundance was consistently high near the creek mouth and low within the creek enclosure. Copepod diversity (H’) was slightly higher (2.00 to 2.57) during September, November,...

Kenya (Kmfri) Institutional Report OceanDocs
Osore, M..
There are several major areas where applied oceanography needs to be addressed in the Indian Ocean and these may generally be summarized as follows: • Climate change and its impacts on the coastal morphology and infrastructure development; • Weather patterns driven by oceanic parameters, and their subsequent socioeconomic impacts; • Pollution arising from sea transportation and land based sources and how these affect marine ecosystems; • Use of oceanography in prediction and monitoring of marine resources (including fisheries, seaweeds, minerals etc). Some of these areas are already being addressed at various scales by projects, state governments and Non Governmental Organizations. To achieve maximum success in the areas mentioned above, the basic...
