Ovalle,Carlos; Ojeda,Felipe; Skewes,Oscar.

Productivity and Persistence of Yellow Serradela (Ornithopus compressus L.) and Biserrula (Biserrula pelecinus L.) in the Mediterranean Climate Region of Central Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
del Pozo,Alejandro; Ovalle,Carlos.
The production and sustainability of non-irrigated pastures in the Mediterranean climate region of central Chile is currently limited by the low diversity of valuable species and cultivars of annual forage legumes, able to persist in zones with highly variable annual rainfall, and low fertility or poorly drained soils. In this work, DM production, seed yield, hardseededness and pasture persistence were evaluated for cultivars of yellow serradella (Ornithopus compressus L.) and biserrula (Biserrula pelecinus L.), in field experiments conducted in the subhumid portion of the Mediterranean climate region of Chile. Burr medic (Medicago polymorpha L.) and sub clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) were used as a reference plants. A remarkable DM production and seed...

Influence of Conservation Tillage and Soil Water Content on Crop Yield in Dryland Compacted Alfisol of Central Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Martinez G,Ingrid; Ovalle,Carlos; Del Pozo,Alejandro; Uribe,Hamil; Valderrama V,Natalia; Prat,Christian; Sandoval,Marco; Fernández,Fernando; Zagal,Erick.
Chilean dryland areas of the Mediterranean climate region are characterized by highly degraded and compacted soils, which require the use of conservation tillage systems to mitigate water erosion as well as to improve soil water storage. An oat (Avena sativa L. cv. Supernova-INIA) - wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Pandora-INIA) crop rotation was established under the following conservation systems: no tillage (Nt), Nt + contour plowing (Nt+Cp), Nt + barrier hedge (Nt+Bh), and Nt + subsoiling (Nt+Sb), compared to conventional tillage (Ct) to evaluate their influence on soil water content (SWC) in the profile (10 to 110 cm depth), the soil compaction and their interaction with the crop yield. Experimental plots were established in 2007 and lasted 3 yr till...

Biological Fixation of N2 in Mono and Polyspecific Legume Pasture in the Humid Mediterranean Zone of Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Espinoza,Soledad; Ovalle,Carlos; del Pozo,Alejandro; Zagal,Erik; Urquiaga,Segundo.
Despite annual legume pasture are of great importance for dryland agricultural systems in Mediterranean environments, there are few studies of N2 biological fixation (NBF) reported in Chile. In this study the NBF of four annual legume species: subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.), yellow serradella (Ornithopus compressus L.), arrow-leaf clover (T. vesiculosum L.), and crimson clover (T. incarnatum L.) (Experiment 1), as well as seven mixtures of these species (Experiment 2) were assessed. The NBF was measured by the 15N natural abundance technique. The objective was to determine NBF in the legume species and in distinct mixtures used. The study was carried out in an Andisol of the Andean Precordillera located in the humid Mediterranean zone of...

Lucerne and other perennial legumes provide new options for rain fed livestock production in the Mediterranean-climate region of Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Ovalle,Carlos; Espinoza,Soledad; Barahona,Viviana; Gerding,Macarena; Humphries,Alan; del Pozo,Alejandro.
In dryland Mediterranean environments, the productivity of annual legumes is low during autumn and winter, with plant senescence typically beginning by the middle of spring because of low soil water availability. Therefore, the use of deep-rooted perennial legumes may provide an alternative to annual legumes in regions with a soil moisture déficit. We evaluated the germplasm of new perennial legumes with deep rooting systems in two field experiments in the interior drylands of central Chile. In experiment 1, sixteen genotypes of four perennial legume species, nine cultivars (cvs.) of Medicago sativa, two of Hedysarum coronarium, three of Lotus tenuis, and two of Lotus corniculatus were evaluated for three seasons (2012-2014). In experiment 2, eight...

Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Muñoz,Cristina; Ovalle,Carlos; Zagal,Erick.
The overexploitation of the natural resources in the Mediterranean-type climate region of Chile, has resulted in natural forest fragmentation and expansion of Acacia caven (Mol), forming the ‘Espinal’ ecosystem (EE) that includes two million of hectares in the Central part of Chile. The effect of the anthropogenic intervention over the soil organic carbon (SOC) in these ecosystems is unknown. The aim of this study was to quantify the SOC stocks and it profile distribution in the EE. This was achieved by collecting soils samples according to soil coverage percentage canopy from: well-preserved Espinal (WPE), 51-80 %; good-preserved (GE), 26-50 %; degraded (DE), 11-25 % and very degraded (VDE), 0-10 %. We also included a native forest (NF), 80-98 % of soil...
