Microeconomic studies often make two assumptions: 1) producers focus on profit maximization, disregarding "external" environmental and health costs; and 2) producers have full information about their production processes and markets. This study examines whether these assumptions are valid for the herbicide use decisions of Michigan corn growers. It further examines corn growers' willingness to pay for reductions in risk associated with the use of herbicide safety characteristics. The approach used involves a mail survey designed to simulate the market for herbicide formulations described as identical to atrazine except that the "new" herbicide formulations are described as a) not carcinogenic to humans, b) not leachable into groundwater, or c) nontoxic...

Focus on Babies: A Note on Parental Attitudes and Preferences for Organic Babyfood AgEcon

The motivation behind purchases of organic foods is not necessarily straightforward. Some individuals may purchase organic foods for health reasons, while others may do so because of concern for the environment. The issue is even more complicated when thinking about babyfood. Because of children’s developing systems, parents and other care givers could be more concerned about the effects of pesticides in conventional foods. However, this issue is relatively unexplored. This study reports results from focus groups with parents of small children regarding their attitudes and preferences, including risk perceptions, toward organic and conventional babyfood.

The Price Premium for Organic Babyfood: A Hedonic Analysis AgEcon

The price premium associated with organic babyfood is estimated by applying a hedonic model to price and characteristic data for babyfood products collected in two cities: Raleigh, North Carolina, and San Jose, California. The price per ounce of babyfood is modeled as a function of a number of babyfood and store characteristics. The estimated organic price premium is generally equal to 3 cents to 4 cents per ounce. To the extent this premium reflects consumer willingness to pay to reduce pesticide exposures, it could be used to infer values for reduced dietary exposures to pesticide residues for babies.

WILL FARMERS USE SAFER PESTICIDES? AgEcon

Virtually all technology adoption studies are conducted ex post, yet policy makers often need to assess the likely level of adoption before the technology is introduced. This study uses data from a contingent valuation survey of Michigan corn growers to assess what factors would influence the adoption of two safer corn herbicides, one that is not carcinogenic and one that does not leach. Results indicate that price, risk perception, and sources of pest control information are all important. This suggests that public policies designed to change perceptions and improve information dissemination may encourage voluntary use of more environmentally friendly technologies.
