Economic Potential of Swine Effluent in Intensified Forage Systems in the Southern Plains AgEcon
Park, Seong Cheol; Vitale, Jeffrey D.; Turner, Jason Clemn; Stoecker, Arthur L.; Hattey, Jeffory A..
The projected long-run increase in corn prices from $2.50 to $3.50 per bushel is expected to have a similar effect on feed prices, pushing up feed costs by as much as 50 percent. With feed costs on the rise, increasing forage production through more intensive management techniques becomes a potentially viable option. This study uses experimental data from a seven-year study in the Oklahoma Panhandle to assess the economic feasibility of intensifying forage production. Four commonly used forage grasses in the region were field tested using two alternative fertilizer sources – swine effluent and urea. The results found that only the two cool season grasses – orchard grass and wheatgrass – generated positive economic returns under intensification.

An Economic Performance Analysis of the Beef Cow-herd Enterprise Using a Stochastic Frontier Function AgEcon
Cho, Jaesung; Park, Seong Cheol; Bevers, Stanley J..
Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) data from Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico were used to examine the economic performance of beef cow herd operations in the Southern Plains region by measuring their technical efficiency index. Factors that make significant impacts on the production are herd size, machinery investment per breeding cow, and rainfall. Little technical inefficiency among the Southern beef cattle operations that participated in the SPA data was found.

LONG-TERM PROFITABILTIY OF ANIMAL MANURE USING OPTIMAL NITROGEN APPLICATION RATE AgEcon
Park, Seong Cheol; Stoecker, Arthur L.; Hattey, Jeffory A.; Turner, Jason Clemn.
Dynamic optimization compared the NPV of manure and ammonium fertilizers on irrigated corn. Yield, soil residual nitrogen and pH functions were estimated from a six year experiment in Oklahoma. Results show that given prices of corn and nitrogen fertilizer, animal manures provide a higher NPV of return than ammonia fertilizer.

Economic and Groundwater Use Implications of Climate Change and Bioenergy Feedstock Production in the Ogallala Aquifer Region AgEcon
Wang, Weiwei; Park, Seong Cheol; McCarl, Bruce A.; Amosson, Stephen H..
The sustainable water use especially for irrigated agriculture in the Texas Panhandle Region is a major concern. A semi-arid climate and average low rainfalls results in little surface water being available year-round. The Ogallala Aquifer is the primary source of irrigation water in this region. The intensive irrigated agricultural production and growing livestock industry have led to substantial decline of water tables. Furthermore, climate change and growing bioenergy feedstock productions exacerbates the water shortage and quality problems. Given the critical dependence of the regional economy on Ogallala Aquifer, underground water use is an intergenerational issue that must be evaluated in terms of the sustainability of agricultural activities in the...

Dryland Wheat variety selection in the Texas High Plain AgEcon
Park, Seong Cheol; Cho, Jaesung; Bevers, Stanley J.; Amosson, Stephen H.; Rudd, Jackie C..
Selecting the best wheat varieties affects producers’ profit and financial risk. This study identifies the optimal wheat variety selection using the portfolio approach at various risk aversion levels. Results showed that the optimal wheat variety selection was significantly affected by changes in levels of risk aversion of decision makers
