Energy density of freshwater Patagonian organisms Ecología austral
Ciancio,Javier; Pascual,Miguel.
We assessed by using a bomb calorimeter the energy density of the main species of Patagonian freshwater ecosystems, including fish, crustaceans, gastropods, oligochaetes, and insects. Fish (5048-5789 Cal/g) were the most energy density group, followed by insects (5062- 5232), crustaceans (3364-3994), oligochaetes (3471) and gastropods (1143). These data consist on the first direct energy density estimations of freshwater species and are intended as a baseline information for modelling the energy fluxes in Patagonian freshwater ecosystems.

The spawning migration of anadromous rainbow trout in the Santa Cruz River, Patagonia (Argentina) through radio-tracking Ecología austral
Riva Rossi,Carla; Arguimbau,Milagros; Pascual,Miguel.
Adult anadromous rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from the Santa Cruz River were implanted with radio-transmitters in May 2000 as they ascended the river from the ocean to locate spawning areas, assess the range and timing of the spawning migration, and determine the composition of the spawning populations. Radio-tagged fish revealed geographic and temporal migration patterns and previously unidentified spawning areas. Telemetry data indicated that anadromous fish dwell and spawn in the main stem river. Range of the total detected upstream migration varied between 2-280 km. Spawning begins by mid winter and peaks in the spring, matching the raise in water temperature, which ranged from 4ºC at the beginning of the spawning season to 10ºC at the end of...

First study of food webs in a large glacial river: the trophic role of invasive trout Neotropical Ichthyology
Tagliaferro,Marina; Kelly,Sean P.; Pascual,Miguel.
Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the food webs structure of a large Patagonian river in two river sections (Upstream and Midstream) and to evaluate isotopic overlap between native and introduced species. We used stable isotope analyses of δ15N and δ13C and stomach content. The Upstream section had a more complex food webs structure with a greater richness of macroinvertebrates and fish species than Midstream. Upstream basal resources were dominated by filamentous algae. Lake Trout were found to have a higher trophic position than all other fish species in that area although, the most abundant fish species, were Rainbow Trout. Depending on the life stage, Rainbow Trout shifted from prey to competitor/predator. In the Midstream section, the...
