Recent data on the western Mediterranean basin (Joides cruise, Montadert et al., 1970, Auzende et al., 1971, Le Borgne et al., 1971) and its connection with the evolution of the Atlantic area (Le Pichon et al., 1970, Talwani et al., 1971, Le Pichon et al. in writing) lead us, like other authors (Dubourdieu, 1962, Stanley and Mutti, 1968, Ryan, 1969 amongst others) to admit the theory of an opening of the Algero-provencal basin during the Cenozoic era. A series of arguments drove us to formulate the hypothesis of an Oligocene age (in process). This work is in line with this perspective. [...] |

The stratigraphic subdivision of the Quaternary deep-sea record is not only of significance to stratigraphers but also to those who seek to understand processes that are recorded in these sediments : for example, climatic change and its causes, ocean chemistry and its variation through time, the phenomena of faunal and floral evolution and extinction, and many others. We characterized the microfacies of sediments encountered dunng Leg 44 on the basis of coarse fraction mineralogy ( sup 125 m), silt mineralogy (63 inf inf 20 m), clay mineralogy ( inf 2 m), silt and clay particle size distributions, and calcium carbonate contents. Secondly we attempted to tentatively correlate microfacies changes with major oceanographic events which have affected the sedimentary processes along the continental margin of North America.Because part of the stratigraphic column was not recovered (no Pliocene and Oligocene, and reduced Pleistocene and Barremian sections), and because of the fairly large sampling intervals our results are far from complete and exhaustive. Some important results, however, concerning the evolution of the... |

We compare the post-lower Cretaceous sedimentary evolution on the Armorican and Blake Plateau continental margins. This comparison is based on lithological studies made on sediments from legs 44 and 48 of D.V. Glomar Challenger. These studies (mineralogy, textures, coarse fraction observation) and the consideration of the accumulation rates for each components, allow us to establish the similarity between the sedimentary regime on both margins. We notice particulary the simultaneous occurrence of a lowermost upper Cretaceous hiatus, reduced accumulation rates during Late Cretaceous and Paleocene ; the instauration of an active bottom current regime during Paleocene and its strengthening during Eocene and Oligocene ; a drastic incrcase of the accumulation... |

The seismic stratigraphy of the Blake-Bahama Basin is interesting because of the apparent acoustic blanking of the deeper reflectors. The blanking is caused by shallow high impedance layers, diffractions at shallow hyperbolic reflectors, and velocity inversions. Only recently have high-energy multichannel seismic techniques been employed in the basin to reveal the true configuration of the deeper reflectors and the extent of the blanking (Figure 1). In 1974 a cooperative U.S. Geological Survey-Institut Français du Pétrole cruise aboard R/V Florence collected three profiles, FC I, II, III, using a 24-fold Flexichoc system (Dillon et al., 1976).DSDP Site 391 was selected on the basis of these U.S.G.S.-I.F.P.seismic data. A survey aboard R/V Conrad was made in... |

On October 19, 1979 off Nice, the upper continental shelf has been affected by a catastrophic event (Gennesseaux et al., 1980). (a) At 2 p.m. (approximate time), following a lowering of the sea level, a tsunami of several meters amplitude reached the Coast line south of Antibes. This was followed during 4 hours by several oscillations of decreasing amplitude, that were felt on a shore length of about 100 km. (b) About the same time, an embanked area 300 m long and wide, collapsed in a few seconds ; after the event the sea-floor in that area was found at a depth of 50 meters. (c) At 17h45 TU and 22h00 TU, two telephone cables have been broken 80 and 110 km off Nice respectively (fig. 1). (d) No earthquake was registered by the Monaco Observatory during this... |

The extent to which the prevailing current regime controls the nature of surface sediments in the Alboran Sea is suggested. Hydrographic data and surface sediments collected during the Polymède II cruise of the R.V. Jean Charcot in 1972 strongly suggest that the sediment distribution is controlled by the current system resulting from the difference in density between the Intermediate and Deep Mediterranean Water and Atlantic Surface Water. Clay, mainly montmorillonite, and planktonic Foraminifera are carried into the Mediterranean by east-flowing Atlantic Surface Water. As the suspended particles settle through the water column, they are redistributed by the westward-flowing deep currents and accumulate on the floor of the sea, where they constitute a... |

THE Walvis Ridge is one of the most conspicuous features of the South Atlantic. It extends from near Tristan da Cunha on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to the African continental margin and has three main segments. The western segment is oriented SW-NE, the central one N-S and the eastern one SSW-NNE. The Walvis Ridge may have kept pace with the opening of the South Atlantic which started in the Early Cretaceous1-6, either by transform fault mechanisms7-8 or by a mantle hot spot and plume 9-12. The eastern segment is thought to have been built throughout the Middle Cretaceous, that is, between 120 m.y. ago and 80 m.y. ago13-15. We report information obtained from an investigation of the age and depositional conditions of sedimentary rock recovered during the Walda... |

From observations made on four piston cores located in the eastern equatorial Pacific, Globoquadrina pseudofoliata, a local marker, became extinct around 300.000 years B.P.; Globigerina calida calida appeared at about 180,000 years B.P.; East of the 1 10th meridian, a pronounced peak in the frequency of Globorotalia inflata occurred at 40.000 years B.P. There is a large overlap of Globoquadrina conglomerata and Gq. pseudofoliata.Globorotalia crassaformis hessi, a tropical Atlantic marker, did occur in the Pacific. The stratigraphic range of four other species is also discussed. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

The drill samples collected during the Térébel expedition show some interesting characteristics. First, these samples have been taken from the sedimentary cover at depths of around 40 m, never attained through classical drillings in this area of the Mediterranean Sea; secondly, they have been the focus of a shared study between different disciplines. It seemed interesting to gather in a synthetic chapter the paleoclimatic results provided by palynology, the study of argillaceous minerals and planktonic foraminiferae. Considering, on the one hand, the shortness of the drill samples and the low density of the samples taken from these cores, and, on the other hand, the lack of a precisely-dated reference level, we had to be extremely cautious with our... |

The study of the rock and sediment dredgings carried out on the Armorican margin between 47 and 48° latitude North enables us to precise this latter's paleogeographical and tectonic evolution and to integrate it to the Bay of Biscay's. The microfacies analysis of the rock samples dating back from the Upper Jurassic to the Neogene era demonstrates: - on the one hand, the belonging of the northern edge of the Armorican margin to the Mesogean domain, at least up to the Mid-Cretaceous period; - on the other hand, the persistence of a carbonated platform regime which seems to operate from the Tithonian to the lower Tertiary phase, and on which reef could grow, especially in the Mid-Cretaceous period. Over the whole period, sedimentation compensated for... |

Three processes are called to explain the deposition of hemipelagic muds accounting for around 95 % of deposits in the Alboran Sea during the Holocene: general currents, distal part of a turbidite current, or a combination of these two causes a "gravity-assisted bottom current". We will discuss these hypotheses based on the results of the study of superficial sediment samples and the current measurements conducted during the Polymède II cruise (April-May 1972) by the R.S. "Jean Charcot", as well as on recent works about this region's hydrology (Lanoix, 1972). |

The analysis of cores taken during the drilling operation of the Terebel's cruise in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea has put into evidence some reworked sediments. However, the occurence of Gtobigerina pachyderma, Gtoborotatia truncatutinoides and Hyalinea balthica gives a quaternary age to these deposits (not older than Sicilian). The microfauna variations in some cores are related to paleoclimatological changes. Some of the sedimentary levels were deposited during a warming interglacial period. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

During the Secondary and Tertiary periods, the northern continental margin of the Bay of Biscay was the scene of some subsidence phenomena which lowered the continental blocks through faults. This was mainly observed off the coast of Brittany and at the entrance of the English Channel [(2), (3)]. During the Géogas cruise of the research vessel "Jean-Charcot" (October 1972), samples were taken from the Mériadzek scarp which forms one of these blocks. A dredging conducted on the southern limb of this structure (pl.) enabled the sampling of some sedimentary rocks among which some fragments of a yellow limestone containing a fauna of rudists could be found. |

Knowledges concerning the nature and distribution of present day sedimentary facies on the slope and in the Biscay abyssal plain are very poor, due to the scarcity of available sea-floor samples.Samples from the uppermost section of Reineck cores obtained in six areas of the Bay of Biscay in water depths ranging from 2,000 to 4,800 m allow us to study the evolution of the sediments according to the water depth and geographic localisation. This study suggests that the sediment from the southern part of the bay independently of depth are characterized by a higher amount in terrigenous components (quartz, clay ...).This disparity is explained by the differing phyisiographic setting (broad shelf in the northern part versus narrow shelf and submarine canyon... |
