Moos, Jan Hendrik; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Rahmann, Gerold.
The abundance of weeds was monitored on several permanent plots on an organically managed farm in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Variation in weed abundance was observed between plots. Neither general increase, nor general decrease in weed abundance could be identified. Most of the annual variations within the data could be explained by annual variation in precipitation. A more intensive view was on the abundance of Cirsium arvense and Galium aparine agg., two problematic weed species. While the known problems arising from the appearance of C. arvense could not be reflected in the used data, the data revealed possible problems through the partly high abundances of G. aparine agg

Studies on greenhouse gas emissions in organic and conventional dairy farms Organic Eprints
Kassow, Antje; Rahmann, Gerold; Blank, Britta; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Aulrich, Karen.
In Germany agriculture is responsible for 14 % of the whole greenhouse gas (GHG) emis-sions. A considerable portion (30 %) of the emissions is caused by dairy farming. Recent discussions about this issue show that there is a lack of solid data. The project "Climate effects and sustainability of organic and conventional farming systems - examination in a network of pilot farms" aims to attain more precise information. A total of 40 conventional and 40 organic farms in Germany are compared in this project. Half of the farm pairs are dairy systems; they are located as organic/conventional pairs in regions with equal soil and climatic conditions. The collected data includes length of life, first calving, milk yield, fodder regime, state of health of the...

Wagner, Kathrin; Brinkmann, Jan; March, Solveig; Hinterstoißer, P.; Warnecke, Sylvia; Schüler, Maximilian; Paulsen, Hans Marten.
Grazing provides livestock better opportunities to act out their species specific behaviour compared to the restrictive stable conditions. Studies on the effect of grazing on animal welfare in dairy farming in Germany are rare and have not been conducted under the specific conditions of organic dairy farming. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of grazing on animal welfare of dairy cows in organic and conventional farming based on the Welfare Quality® protocol for dairy cattle. In this paper, we present the initial evaluation of a comparison between zero grazing and summer grazing. The first results indicate an improvement in most welfare principles during the summer months for dairy cows with summer grazing, except for between...

Selektion auf Methioninreichtum des Samenproteins bei heimischen Leguminosen Organic Eprints
Schumacher, Henrik; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Gau, A. E.; Link, Wolfgang.
While grain legumes can be regarded as highly valuable protein source for animal nutrition, certain drawbacks inhibit their use as sole foodstuff for livestock. The nutrient quality is reduced by low concentrations of tryptophan and sulfur amino acids. In the past substantial breeding effort has been invested in the reduction of antinutritional components and disease resistance while the protein quality has not been a focal point. To improve the protein quality the elevation of the low sulfur amino acid content is of prominent importance especially for organic production where high methionine feed components are rare. The present work tries to establish a method to select methionine enriched grain legumes for further breeding steps. Agronomical important...

Mischfruchtanbausysteme mit Ölpflanzen im ökologischen Landbau 2. Ertragsstruktur des Mischfruchtanbaus von Lein (Linum ustitatissivum L.) mit Sommerweizen, Hafer oder Leindotter Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten.

Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Schädlich, Olaf; Oppermann, Rainer.
Local oil mills, processing organic oilseeds solely, suffer competitive disad¬vantages by lower workloads due to low organic yields. Organic rapeseed oil as sub¬stitute for diesel fuel is not economically justifiable due to its high production costs and opportu-nity costs in the food market. Only organic sunflower oil or oil of false flax (Camelina sativa) grown in mixed cropping systems have produc¬tion costs comparable to con-ventional rapeseed oil. An ecobalance showed that false flax oil from mixed cropping systems as substitute for diesel has clear ecological advantages compared to oil from single cropped oilseeds. But the use of false flax as fuel in engines is still not proofed in science and technology.

N-Bedarf und N-Effizienz von Mischfruchtanbausystemen mit Ölpflanzen im ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Schochow, Martin; Behrendt, Andrea.
Mixed cropping systems with oil crops are of growing interest in organic farming. They can offer agricultural advances like competition against weeds, support against lodg¬ing and buffering of yield fluctuations. The aim of the cultivation method is to gain additional oil yields for energy or feed purposes. The reported higher land-efficiency-ratios of those mixed cropping systems should lead to higher nutrient requirements. But it is unknown if the different crops just compete for rare soil nutrients or if comple¬mentary effects in mixed cropping systems lead to higher nutrient efficiency. In a field study N-contents in plants and N uptake of diverse mixed cropping systems were compared to sole cropping systems. In linseed (Linum usitatissivum) or false...

Der Dauerbeobachtungsversuch Trenthorst - Konzeption und Versuchsaufbau Organic Eprints
Schaub, Dagmar; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Böhm, Herwart; Rahmann, Gerold.
Although the crop rotation is an essential element of organic farming, only few long-term trials exist which compare different crop rotations under temperate climate. The long-term monitoring Trenthorst was established in 2003 and comprises the different crop rotations of two cash crop farms and three livestock farms specialised in dairy, pigs and goats/oil seeds respectively. In addition to the comparison of crop rotations under practical farm conditions the long-term monitoring study aims to analyse the development of soil parameters, yields and crop qualities after the conversion to organic agriculture. On each arable field four monitoring points were established, where the relevant parameters are measured. The yields of the first three years are...

Erträge und Qualitäten von Saflor (Carthamus tinctorius L.) im ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Matthäus, Bertrand.
Due to the high nutritive value of safflower oil, its weed suppressing capacities, its earlier ripening time compared to sunflowers and the potential of breeding success, safflower could be an interesting crop for organic farmers in future. Yield and qualities of the variety ‘Sabina’ at different organic sites in Germany are reported. Kernel yield, oil and raw protein contents were dependant from site conditions. Average yield levels between 0.2-2.8 t ha-1 with oil contents between 5.5-23.7 % were found.

Hinterstoißer, P.; Schulz, Franz; Schüler, Maximilian; Wagner, Kathrin; Brinkmann, Jan; March, Solveig; Paulsen, Hans Marten.
For reasons of animal health, milk yield and for environmental issues an optimal supply of protein and energy for dairy cows is essential. The aim of this study is to examine potential protein and energy malnutrition and surplus in dairy herds. We present a comparison of the protein and energy supply between 18 conventional and 16 organic dairy herds. Initial results indicate an undersupply on energy in the first one hundred days of lactation in both the organic and conventional feeding regimes. It is easier to provide an adequate protein supply in conventional conditions in the first one hundred days than in organic ones. A balanced supply is guaranteed for a mere 21,3 % of the organic cows. In the second one hundred days this increases to 26,5 %,...

Unterschiedliche Fütterung: Treibhausgaslast der Milch von vier Milchviehbetrieben Organic Eprints
Warnecke, Sylvia; Paulsen, Hans Marten.
Four organic dairy farms of a German farm network (www.pilotbetriebe.de) were described in detail with respect to average diets and feedstuff quality, and were compared to the mean results of the 22 organic and 22 conventional farms of the network. At milk yields between 4,469 and 6,769 kg energy corrected milk (ECM) a-1, rations of three farms almost completely depended on grass and grass clover from both grassland and arable land (96-100 %; mean organic approx. 75 %). The fourth farm was similar to the average conventional milk yield and diet (incl. maize silage and a high share of concentrates) hence it largely depended on arable land. Enteric methane (CH4) emissions per kg ECM were higher the more fibre rich feedstuffs were fed and, as expected, the...

Zusammensetzung von Wirtschaftsdüngern ökologischer und konventioneller Milchviehbetriebe im Rahmen des Projekts Klimawirkungen und Nachhaltigkeit von Landbausystemen Organic Eprints
Blank, Britta; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Kassow, Antje; Rahmann, Gerold; Aulrich, Karen.

Schüler, Maximilian; Koesling, Matthias; Paulsen, Hans Marten.
Life cycle assessment (LCA) allows systematic comparisons of environmental performance between different products. The functional unit in LCA for milk production is typically set to 1 kg energy corrected milk. This does not however suffice as definition to allow for comparing different studies. The definition of reference flow can introduce a bias between organic and conventional farming systems. We strongly encourage to include definition of reference flow calculation, choice of algorithm for energy calculation as well as choice of energy content of milk in the communication of any results.

Ohm, Magdalena; Schüler, Maximilian; Paulsen, Hans Marten.
Mineral phosphorus (P) fertilizers from fossil reserves are finite which puts agriculture at risk of losing soil fertility. This study calculates P soil balances of an organic dairy farm in Northern Germany to focus on potentials and variations in the farm P cycle. P flows were different between the years because yield levels and amount of manure application varied. Different plant species showed different P export which depended mainly on biomass export. This can also be seen as their site specific mobilization potential. The highest mean P export between 2010 and 2012 was measured with maize (mean 30.4, range 17.7-38.2 kg P ha-1 a-1) and grass-clover (mean 23.7, range 17.3-29.5 kg P ha-1 a-1). By grazing, permanent grassland showed a mean P mobilization...

Böhm, Herwart; Oldenburg, Elisabeth; Paulsen, Hans Marten.
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Schrader, Stefan; Schnug, Ewald.
