Contribution of organic farming to conserving and improving biodiversity in Germany – the example avi-fauna Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold; Paulsen, Hans-Marten; Hötker, Hermann; Jeromin, Knut; Schrader, Stefan; Haneklaus, Silvia; Schnug, Ewald.
Although it is the aim of organic farming to increase biodiversity, there is little knowledge about the impact of organic farming on birds. From 2001 to 2003, the number of breeding birds was recorded annually on the organic experimental farm of the Institute of Organic Farming (600 ha), and on adjacent conventional and organic farms (60 ha and 40 ha) in Northern Germany. The number of skylark (Alauda arvensis) territories increased considerably after the conversion from conventional to organic farming on the premises of the Institute. Their number remained unvaried on the conventional farm. The highest density of skylark territories was found on the farm which has been under organic management for many years. The number of yellowhammer (Emberiza...

Development of collembolans after conversion towards organic farming Organic Eprints
Schrader, Stefan; Kiehne, Jahn; Anderson, Traute; Paulsen, Hans-Marten; Rahmann, Gerold.
In Northern Germany, a diverse and complex experimental farm of the Federal Agricultural Research Centre (FAL) was set-up in 2001 covering all main aspects of organic farming. Previously, the 600 ha farm had been managed conventionally. Adjacent conventional farms were used as reference. The aim of this project was to study collembolans, microbial biomass and soil organic carbon in six organically farmed fields managed as a crop rotation of six different crops compared with an adjacent conventionally managed field. We hypothesized that the specific management in organic farming promotes soil biota. Soil samples were taken during the growing season in 2004. Collembolan abundances and microbial biomass were lower under organic management, but, generally,...

Effects of temporarily reduced tillage in organic crop rotations on yield, earthworm biomass and development of weed pressure. First results of a case study from Schleswig-Holstein/Germany Organic Eprints
Moos, Jan Hendrik; Paulsen, Hans-Marten; Schrader, Stefan; Rahmann, Gerold.
Farming systems applying reduced tillage measures are expected to be beneficial for sustaining important soil functions (ecosystem services) and (soil)biodiversity. Furthermore a reduction in tillage intensity is connected to reduced need for energy and labour input. On the other hand waiving the plough is, especially in organic farming systems, suspected to lead to increased weed pressure and therefore decreases in yields. In this paper first results of a study on temporarily reduced tillage in organic crop-rotations are presented. Here the plough was set aside before drilling triticale at the end of four crop rotations, and expectable yields, earthworm biomass and weed pressure were investigated. First one-year-results, of the experiment on temporarily...

Organic farming - stewardship for food security, food quality, environment and nature conservation Organic Eprints
Schnug, Ewald; Haneklaus, Silvia; Rahmann, Gerold; Paulsen, Hans-Marten; Walker, Robin.
Conventional agriculture is associated with problems such as pesticide residues in soils and plants, contamination of meat with antibiotics and hormones, and eutrophication of water bodies. An alternative for consumers is the consumption of products from organic farming. Organic management is possible on arable farms, although livestock is often a crucial part of the system as manure and slurry can contribute significantly to maintaining closed nutrient cycles. Independent of the management system, it is not possible to exclude nutrient losses to the environment on agricultural fields, but acceptable loads need to be defined. Organic farming can contribute to environmental protection and nature conservation in many ways, for instance by improving soil...

Effect of false flax oilcake in thermophilic biogas production Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans-Marten; Xiaming, Wei; Sun, Yongming; Rahmann, Gerold; Böhm, Herwart.
False flax oilcake has been found to be suitable for anaerobic fermentation in mixtures with cattle slurry and straw. In organic farms, digestion of cattle dung and wheat straw with 8 % dry matter content mixed with 5 % of total material weight false flax oilcake is a feasible option for utilizing false flax oilcake to produce farm-own renewable energy and offering farm-own high nitrogen (ammonia) content fertilizer (2.48 g kg-1 wet wt). In field digesters, the biogas yield of 8 % dry matter pure material under thermophilic condition was 0.24 l g-1 VS fed. The biogas yield could be increased by mixing 5 % false flax oilcake to get 0.37 l g-1 VS fed and a VS conversion efficiency with 0.83 l g-1 VS destroyed. Under laboratory controlled conditions, the...

Soil organic carbon stocks in hedge-banks as agricultural marginal areas Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans-Marten; Bauer, Benjamin.
