On October 16, 1979, off the Bay of Nice, a turbidity current, generated by large submarine landslides. was channelled by submarine valleys down to the bathyal plain of the Ligurian Sea where it seriously damaged two submarine cables, at about 80 and 110 km from its starting-point. The measured mean speeds were 17 km/h, above the first cable, and 7 km/h between the two cables, but the speed may have reached 40 km/h on the upper slope. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

The alignment of the Balearic Islands, stretching from the Spanish mainland towards the Corsican-Sardinian block, has long intrigued many geologists. Since Suess (1886), we know that the Balearic block (Ibiza, Formentera, and Majorca) is part of the Alpine system. Many authors (Kober, 1914; Staub, 1928; Kober, 1931) have subsequently attempted to comprehensively integrate the history of the Balearic block within the history of the Alpine chain. In this paper, we will use data from marine geology and geophysics to define the location of the Balearic Islands during the diverse phases of distension, shearing, and compression between the European and African plates, which created the present western Mediterranean and the Alpine chain. In particular, we will... |

A revised bathymetric chart of the Baie des Anges of Nice-Côte d'Azur has been produced using the Sea-Beam multibeam echo-sounder. The narrow beams of this new system and precision radionavigation techniques have resulted in seven charts at a scale of 1/10 000 with a contour intervals of 10m. The analysis of these charts delineates the principal morphologic units of the region : two active canyons (the Var and the Paillon), two sedimentary ridges extending from Cape Antibes and Cape Ferrat, a coastal sediment fan and a fossil deltaic system. The entire area appears to be undergoing erosion at present, principally by gravity mass movements. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

New oceanographic data enable us to precise the geological phenomena linked to the convergence zones of two lithospheric plates. Taking into example the Peruvian continental margin, the subduction phenomenon of the Nazca plate under the South-American plate can be tackled. This subduction occurs in the domain which is immersed by seisms, volcanism, magmatism and tectonics. We present the geophysical and sedimentological data specific to the oceanic domain of the Nazca plate and follow its evolution as it reaches the Peruvian margin. Up until the Peruvian fault, the analysis is relatively easy. |

Recent data on the western Mediterranean basin (Joides cruise, Montadert et al., 1970, Auzende et al., 1971, Le Borgne et al., 1971) and its connection with the evolution of the Atlantic area (Le Pichon et al., 1970, Talwani et al., 1971, Le Pichon et al. in writing) lead us, like other authors (Dubourdieu, 1962, Stanley and Mutti, 1968, Ryan, 1969 amongst others) to admit the theory of an opening of the Algero-provencal basin during the Cenozoic era. A series of arguments drove us to formulate the hypothesis of an Oligocene age (in process). This work is in line with this perspective. [...] |

Analyses of polymetallic nodules from the central south Pacific and from the underlying sediments indicate that nodule abundance is at least partly related to the degree of carbonate dissolution, which, it self, is strongly influenced by the flow o f the Antarctic Bottom Water. The greatest nodule abundance is generally encountered in a 300 to 400 meter thick water layer situated between the lysocline and the calcite compensation depth levels. This range of depth is the first and main controlling factor of abundance. Inside this range, the bathymetry represents a secondary factor influencing both abundance and grade. Some correlations appear locally between nodule grade and abundance.Nodule grade seems to be generally related to the bottom morphology. A sedimentological, biostratigraphical, mineralogical, geochemical (major and trace elements including rare earths) and isotopic (Rb/Sr) study was made of core samples drilled between the Touamotou Archipelago and the Marquises Islands. This structurally complex region of the South Pacific is characterised by volcanism and deep ocean water circulation. The samples consisted of two 20 cm cores of surface sediment, and a flattened nodule with indurated centre, taken close to the cores. One core sample (T KR 07) is entirely composed of brown, soft sediment. The top part of the second core (T KS 19) is also brown mud but the bottom is indurated. The brown sediment is essentially composed of phillipsite, palagonite. micronodules and nontronite. The indurated... |

Recent studies undertaken by the Centre National pour l'Exploitation des Oceans have focused some attention on the environment of nickel- and copper-bearing iron-manganese nodules in the Tuamotu Archipelago region of the South Pacific. The results indicate that the distribution of the nodules is closely linked to that of deep currents in the area. We attempt to show that these currents are associated mainly with the Antarctic Bottom Water and we attribute the episodical character of nodule formation in this region to major pulsations of the Antarctic Bottom Water. A synthesis of what are considered to be primary factors in the nodules formation are incorporated into a tentative model which is presented as a guide for future exploration for polymetallic... |

A sedimentological, mineralogial and geochemical study was made on surface sediment samples associated with nodules in the Tiki Basin (Central South Pacific). The aim of this study was to find variations in the sediment composition with respect to bathymetry and to thus show a relationship between nodule formation and sedimentation. It is now well known that nodules rich, from an economical point of view, are located in this area at a depth more than 4100 meters. The progressive transformation of a carbonate ooze rich in Foraminifera and poor in siliceous biogenic material into a metalifferous sediment has been shown. The CaCO(3), dissolution involves Fe and Mn enrichment of the sediment. The content of these elements becomes stable and independant of... |

The Tiki basin is in the south central Pacific, south of the Marquesas Islands and east of the Tuamotu archipelago. It is bounded nothwards by the Marquesas Fracture Zone and divided in two parts by the topographic heights cunstituting the end to the Tuamotu Fracture Zone. One hundred stations with nodule sampling were occupied by the Group CNEXO-SLN in this area (scale 1O X 10 degrees). The nodule abundance at each station is determined from the weight of nodules brought back by free fall grabs. Chemical analysis were made on each sample (three by station) and the values presented here are the mean values. The parameters : abundance, Ni grade, Cu grade and Mn grade are compared with water depth and topographic features of the area. The main results are :... |

In 1921 the "Pourquoi pas?" undertook, under the authority of J. Charcot, an identification of the Rockall bank (2). The petrographic nature of this relief was studied by Lacroix (2) who concluded to aegirine granite dated, since then, by Miller (3) and Sabine (4), from the early Tertiary period. At the beginning of the Noratlante cruise, in August 1969, the "J. Charcot" carried out a number of profiles, tallying the Porcupine and the Rockall area (fig.1). In addition to the gravimetry and magnetism recordings, an oblique-reflection profile and six Flexotir seismic-reflection profiles (with a frequency comprised of between 10 and 30 cycles) were carried out. We only present here the first results based on this last technique. |

The Alboran Sea (Figure 1) is a narrow sea (200 km wide), closed on the West by the "Arc of Gibraltar" and opening in the east into the Balearic Basin. The Betic chains extend along its northern border, the Rif chain extends along its southwest border, and its southern border is essentially formed by the Atlas Foreland. The Betico-Rif ensemble forms an arc having divergent structures (dipping away from the Alboran Sea). South of the sea, the Rif structures turn towards the northeast in contact with the autochthonous and semiautochthonous Atlas Foreland. The Rif and the Betic chains are affected by numerous northeast-southwest and northwest-southeast lateral faults whose role seems important (Kornprobst, 1971; Andrieux et al., 1971 ; Jacquin, 1970), but is... |
