WHAT DO WE REALLY KNOW ABOUT ENTREPRENEURS? AN ANALYSIS OF NASCENT ENTREPRENEURS IN INDIANA AgEcon
Marshall, Maria I.; Peake, Whitney O..
A great deal of time and effort has been dedicated to entrepreneurship research regarding the characteristics of entrepreneurs. However, characteristics of entrepreneurs in the gestation period have received less attention due to the difficulty of obtaining data from potential entrepreneurs at this stage in the entrepreneurial process. The purpose of this study is twofold. First we review the literature to determine key characteristics of entrepreneurs. Then utilizing a sample of Indiana entrepreneurs in the gestation stage, we conduct an empirical analysis. In addition to the key components identified through the literature review, in the empirical analysis additional variables are considered that we believe will be major determinants of business start-up.

Does Experience Determine Performance? A Meta-Analysis on the Experience-Performance Relationship AgEcon
Peake, Whitney O.; Marshall, Maria I..
The impact of experience on entrepreneurial performance has been widely tested. Although experience is expected to positively impact performance, results are varied. This research synthesizes the current literature by determining systematic sources of variation through both exploratory and ordered probit analyses. Results reveal that start date for data collection and form of experience tested pose a major impact on the probability of obtaining a positive estimate for the experience-performance relationship. This research further emphasizes the need for tightened standards across the experience-performance literature in order to equip both academics and practitioners with better information.

MILKING THE MOST FROM YOUR PROMOTIONAL DOLLARS: AN ANALYSIS OF AGRIBUSINESS FIRMS SERVING U.S.AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS AgEcon
Roucan-Kane, Maud; Peake, Whitney O..
Although the marketing mix has been covered in great detail in many veins of literature, very little information exists regarding the mix of marketing tools within the agriculture industry serving U.S. agricultural producers. Using a survey conducted by AgriMarketing magazine in June 2006, a two-fold analysis is undertaken. This study attempts to determine the differences in the use of marketing tools by industry and simple regression analysis is conducted to determine promotional factors that produce a significant impact on sales. Both mass media and other promotional tools were found to be the most consistently significant factor impacting sales of firms in the study.

Human Capital and its Effect on Entrepreneurship: A Key Component or Much Ado About Nothing? AgEcon
Marshall, Maria I.; Peake, Whitney O..
Understanding the impact of human capital on small business development is crucial to both entrepreneurs and the entities that serve them. The objective of this study, therefore, is to determine the impact of human capital on entrepreneurs who are approaching firm birth, in order to provide entrepreneurs, small business development centers, and universities with the best resources possible. One hundred twenty-eight entrepreneurs in the gestation period have been contacted through workshops held by Purdue University and the Indiana Small Business Development Center. Sixty-five of those entrepreneurs agreed to participate in a two year study with follow-up information gathered at two month intervals, giving a current response rate of approximately 51%....

Is Degree of Rurality More Crucial to Small Firm Births than Access to Incubators? An Analysis of States' Relative Efficiencies in Promoting the Birth of Small Firms AgEcon
Peake, Whitney O.; Marshall, Maria I..
Economic development via firm birth has recently been an important topic for many state governments. However, ways in which state governments can influence firm births are not obvious, and their efficiency in fostering firm births in comparison to their peers is even less so. Focusing on the birth of small firms in the contiguous US, regression analysis and non-parametric efficiency testing are employed to determine both the expenditures state governments can target to indirectly promote small firm birth and their relative efficiency in utilizing these expenditures. The regression results reveal three significant expenditure inputs and one significant controlling factor in determining firm birth, while the efficiency tests regarding states' use of these...

Has the "Farm Problem" Disappeared? A Comparison of Household and Self-Employment Income Levels of the Farm and Nonfarm Self-Employed AgEcon
Peake, Whitney O.; Marshall, Maria I..
This study tests the impact of household and demographic factors on the economic well-being of the farm and nonfarm self-employed using data from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series. Parametric and nonparametric techniques are used to test for statistical differences in self-employment and household income levels. Further, household and demographic factors are tested for their effect on self-employment income using a censored tobit regression model. The farm self-employed report significantly higher levels of self-employment income. Results reveal that several household and demographic factors significantly impact self-employment income levels for the farm and nonfarm self-employed, with key differences in impacts.
