SHELTERFISH New tools to improve fish health and environment in organic aquaculture Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred; Gesto, Manuel; Buchmann, Kurt; Lorenzen, Niels; Pedersen, Lars-Flemming; Henriksen, Niels Henrik; Schmidt, Jacob; Madsen, Lone; Kania, Per; Pedersen, Per Bovbjerg.
Rainbow trout farming and in particular organic rainbow trout farms are critically challenged by the relatively high prevalence of skin/gill infections caused by various pathogens, especially the parasite Costia (Ichthyobodo necator) and amoebae, which are ultimately lethal for fry/smaller fish. In addition, a Midichloria-like bacterium causes the non-lethal skin disease Red Mark Syndrome (RMS), which results in downgrading/rejection of up to 30% of the fish when placed on the market. Treatment by use of antibiotics/parasitics/ auxiliary compounds is only possible to a limited extent in organic trout production. Hence, solutions to prevent and/or treat costia, amoebae and RMS are urgently needed, not only to secure production of organic rainbow trout in...

Crosstalk between Innate Immunity and Circadian Rhythm: Do fish immune defences have a sense of time? Organic Eprints
Lazado, Carlo Cabacang; Lund, Ivar; Skov, Peter V.; Jokumsen, Alfred; Gesto, Manuel; Nguyen, Huy Quang; Pedersen, Per Bovbjerg.
Circadian rhythms established by the endogenous clocks enable organisms to anticipate periodic and cyclic changes in their environment. This internal time-keeping system is highly conserved amongst animals and provides them with adaptive advantages as biological processes can be scheduled to occur at the most crucial times of the day. Circadian rhythm is emerging as an important regulator of immune functions. However, there is a paucity of information on the influence of this biological phenomenon in the immune mechanisms of teleost fish. A series of studies was conducted to investigate the circadian rhythms of systemic and mucosal innate immunity using model (i.e., zebrafish, Danio rerio) and non-model (i.e., permit, Trachinotus falcatus; rainbow trout,...
