Rhodococcus equi pneumonia in foals MV&Z
Peiró, Juliana Regina; Mendes, Luiz Cláudio Nogueira; Borges, Alexandre Secorun; Feitosa, Francisco Leydson Formiga; Canola, Júlio Carlos; Alessi, Antônio Carlos.
Pneumonia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in foals. Although many different organisms have been associated with pneumonia in foals, Rhodococcus equi is considered to be one of the most important problems for horse-breeding farms worldwide. This review article discusses general etiopathology, epidemiology and immunology principles. Specific recommendations are presented for diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control of R. equi - induced pneumonia.

Footrot outbreak in a sheep herd in the Araçatuba region, state of S. Paulo, Brazil MV&Z
Rodrigues, Celso Antônio; Mendes, Luiz Cláudio Nogueira; Peiró, Juliana Regina; Feitosa, Francisco Leydson Formiga.
Footrot is a multifactorial, contagious, bacterial disease that starts in the interdigital space and spreads to the horny parts of the feet, particularly in sheep. Dichelobacter nodosus (Bacteroides nodosus) is the causing agent and main pathogen of this complex disease. The classification of footrot as virulent or benign is based on the proteolytic characteristics of the bacteria and extension of epidermal matrix involvement, and hence the degree of hom separation. The disease is particularly prevalent in the Brazilian South states and is found less often in the state of S. Paulo. The objective of this study was to report an outbreak of the virulent form of the disease in a 400-sheep farm in the region of Araçatuba, after some animals from the state of...

Endotoxemia in horses MV&Z
Peiró, Juliana Regina; Valadão, Carlos Augusto Araújo.
This is a review article on endotoxemia, an important cause of mortality in horses during colic syndrome. It also discusses structural aspects of the lipopolysaccharide molecule, production and release of cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor, clinical signs and peritoneal fluid evaluation.

Laboratory evaluation of peritoneal fluid in experimental models used to induce intra-abdominal inflammatory reaction in equines MV&Z
Mendes, Luiz Cláudio Nogueira; Peiró, Juliana Regina; Marques, Luiz Carlos; Borges, Alexandre Secorun.
This is a review article about the peritoneum anatomy and function, pathophysiology of the peritoneal injury, and evaluation of the normal peritoneal fluid. Normal values are compared to those obtained in experimental model of induced peritoneal inflammation that were developed in Brazil to study several aspects of peritonitis in horses, specially those associated with clinical and/or surgical complications of colic. It also discusses data related to cellularity, biochemical and anatornicopathological methods, as well as the quantitative evaluation of cytokines in the peritoneal fluid of these models.
