At the necropsy, an ulcerated black mass was found at the left jaw projecting into the oral cavity. The tumor reached the chin, inferior lip and tongue. Metastases were detected within the tongue, parotid gland, lymph nodes, trachea, thyroid, pleura, lungs, heart, peritoneum, omentum, and serosal membranes of the forestomach and abomasum, liver, and intima of some hepatic vessels, mammary gland, and muscles and fasciae of the left hind leg. Spontaneous poisoning by Leucaena leucocephalai in a goat from Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil Ciência Rural
Peixoto,Paulo Vargas; França,Ticiana Nascimento; Cunha,Bernardo Melo; Tavares,Danielle Valadão Albernaz Mattos; Brito,Marilene Farias.
Poisoning of a goat by Leucaena leucocephalai (Leg. Mimosoideae) in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is described. Fresh leaves of the plant were ingested as the animal's main meal for at least 4 months before it developed total alopecia. At necropsy the thyroid was moderately enlarged. Histological examination revealed a decrease in the number of hair follicles (empty or in telogenic phase), vacuolation of keratinocytes of the epidermis and hair follicles, and superficial and follicular hyperkeratosis. Myxedema was found between skeletal and cardiac muscles fibers, in the kidneys, and in the submucosa/muscular layer of the digestive tract. The thyroid follicles were enlarged and filled with copious amounts of colloid (colloidal goiter). Although L....

Mammary adenocarcinoma in a mare Ciência Rural
Brito,Marilene de Farias; Seppa,Gilberto Santos; Teixeira,Luisa Gouvêa; Rocha,Thais Gomes; França,Ticiana do Nascimento; Hess,Tanja Maria; Peixoto,Paulo Vargas.
A non-lactating 17-year-old grey barren Mangalarga Marchador mare was referred to the Large Animal Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), presenting enlargement of the mammary gland. The owner reported that the animal had a lesion in the mammary gland for at least two years, diagnosed and treated as chronic mastitis. Initially only the right gland was involved, presenting ulceration and exudation on the cutaneous surface. After 20 months, the left gland also became affected. The diagnosis of tubulo-papillary adenocarcinoma was based on the typical microscopic lesions. This work shows the importance of the histopathological examination in the differential diagnosis between the neoplasms and the chronic inflammation in...

Lesions caused by Africanized honeybee stings in three cattle in Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Caldas,Saulo Andrade; Graça,Flávio Augusto Soares; de Barros,Júlia Soares Monteiro; Rolim,Márcia Farias; Peixoto,Tiago da Cunha; Peixoto,Paulo Vargas.
We report three cases of stings by Africanized bees in cattle in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Erythema, subcutaneous edema, necrosis accompanied by skin detachment, and subsequent skin regeneration were observed, especially on the head and dewlap. Histopathological examinations performed 45 days later revealed complete skin reepithelialization with moderate dermal fibrosis. The clinical picture and differential diagnosis are discussed in the present manuscript, with a focus on photosensitization, which causes cutaneous lesions on the head (sequela) with cicatricial curving of the ears and can be very similar to what is observed in cattle attacked by swarms of bees. The distinction between photosensitization and bee sting lesions can be made with a...
