Gonçalves,Ana Carolina de Oliveira; Cazarim,Maurilio de Souza; Sanches,Cristina; Pereira,Leonardo Régis Leira; Baldoni,André de Oliveira.
Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) affects millions of people worldwide and causes several complications for the patient, consuming large sums of financial resources from the health services. This study aims to estimate the financial investment of DM2 treatment for glycemic control of the patient, from the point of view of the municipal Public Health System (SUS). The Delphi technique was used to validate the opinion of a team of judges, specialists in DM2, and health service managers, on the investment necessary for glycemic control of patients with DM2 through the application of questionnaires. In order for the patient to achieve glycated hemoglobin (A1c) < 7%, an investment of US$ 2,419.06 (value/patient/year) is necessary. As the value of A1c increases,...

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of an internet-based continuing education (CE) program on pharmacy-based minor ailment schemes (PMASs). A controlled randomized clinical trial was conducted in community pharmacies in Brazil. Community pharmacists (CPs) were enrolled in two groups: intervention (n = 61) and control (n = 60). CPs who were enrolled to the intervention group participated in an Internet-based CE program. CPs in the control group received no educational intervention. We evaluated participant perception, learning outcomes, and practice performance. Learner satisfaction with the CE program was high for every point evaluated (mean ± standard deviation = 4.2 ± 0.4). Posttest learner outcome scores and practice...

This cross-sectional study was carried out with 1000 elderly outpatients assisted by a Basic Health District Unit (UBDS) from the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS) in the municipality of Ribeirão Preto. We analyzed the clinical, socioeconomic and pharmacoepidemiological profile of the elderly patients in order to identify factors associated with polypharmacy amongst this population. We used a truncated negative binomial model to examine the association of polypharmacy with the independent variables of the study. The software SAS was used for the statistical analysis and the significance level adopted was 0.05. The most prevalent drugs were those for the cardiovascular system (83.4%). There was a mean use of seven drugs per patient and 47.9% of the...

Interchangeability among therapeutic equivalents of lamotrigine: evaluation of quality of life BJPS
Girolineto,Beatriz Maria Pereira; Junior,Veriano Alexandre; Sakamoto,Américo Ceiki; Pereira,Leonardo Régis Leira.
Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological disorder worldwide. Approximately 70% of patients with epilepsy have their seizures controlled by clinical and pharmacological treatment. This research evaluated the possible influence of interchangeability among therapeutic equivalents of LTG on the clinical condition and quality of life of refractory epileptic patients. The study was divided into three periods of 42 days, and an equivalent therapeutic LTG randomly dispensed for each period (two similars - formulations A and B, and the reference product - formulation C). The mean dose of LTG was 5.5 mg/kg/day. The presence of side effects tends to have a greater deleterious effect on quality of life of refractory epileptics compared to variations in number...

Cost-effectiveness of insulin analogs from the perspective of the Brazilian public health system BJPS
Cazarim,Maurílio de Souza; Rodrigues,João Paulo Vilela; Cruz-Cazarim,Estael Luzia Coelho da; Ayres,Lorena Rocha; Pereira,Leonardo Régis Leira.
ABSTRACT Human insulin is provided by the Brazilian Public Health System (BPHS) for the treatment of diabetes, however, legal proceedings to acquire insulin analogs have burdened the BPHS health system. The aim of this study was to perform a cost-effectiveness analysis to compare insulin analogs and human insulins. This is a pharmacoeconomic study of cost-effectiveness. The direct medical cost related to insulin extracted from the Ministry of Health drug price list was considered. The clinical results, i.e. reduction in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), were extracted by meta-analysis. Different scenarios were structured to measure the uncertainties regarding the costs and reduction in HbA1c. Decision tree was developed for sensitivity of Incremental Cost...

Elderly and drugs: risks and necessity of rational use BJPS
Baldoni,André de Oliveira; Chequer,Farah Maria Drumond; Ferraz,Elisa Raquel Anastácio; Oliveira,Danielle Palma de; Pereira,Leonardo Régis Leira; Dorta,Daniel Junqueira.
In recent decades, the world has undergone a demographic transformation with a rapid growth of the elderly population, resulting in an increased demand for funds to maintain their health and drug consumption. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes occurring in the elderly can interfere directly in the adverse effects of drugs and increase the risk of intoxication. In addition, there are external factors interfering with the pharmacotherapy of the elderly, such as inappropriate use and the lack of access to information. Many therapeutic classes of drugs should be used with caution or avoided in the elderly population, such as anti-inflammatory and some anti-hypertensive drugs, diuretics and digitalis. If not managed carefully, these medicines can...

Reis,Tiago Marques dos; Guidoni,Camilo Molino; Baldoni,André Oliveira; Giroto,Edmarlon; Obreli Neto,Paulo Roque; Ayres,Lorena Rocha; Pereira,Leonardo Régis Leira.
ABSTRACT Dispensing drug is a moment in which the pharmacist is able to analyze pharmacotherapy and contribute to its rational use. However, research has shown that some pharmacists lack adequate knowledge to perform this service. This study aims to describe a research protocol for a clinical trial to test the effectiveness of a distance learning program to train pharmacists in dispensing drugs. This is a protocol for an open diagnostic, non-randomized, single group clinical trial. A 12-week duration distance learning course was structured on the Moodle platform for training community pharmacists who are registered in the Regional Board of Pharmacy and work as employees or owners in Brazilian community pharmacies. The course curricula involves concepts and...
