The biogeological organization of Thau lagoon was investigated through the granulometric analysis of surficial sediments and study of the qualitative and the quantitative distribution of benthic macrofauna and meiofauna. These show clearly that the lagoonal system is organized according to confinement as conceived by Guelorget and Perthuisot (1983 a; 1992), which depends upon the rate of exchanges with the open sea and the hydrodynamic pattern of the basin. The latter appears to be composed of a pair of lagoonal subsystems separated by a hydrodynamically unstable barrier. The northern subsystem displays the classical concentric organization of Mediterranean lagoons with a clearly defined hydraulic umbilicus. The southern subsystem displays a transverse... |

The deep, elongated paralic basin of Kalloni bay has been studied through comparisons between several computed hydrodynamical situations and data collected in similar situations from its water body. These include salinities and phytoplanktonic biomasses. Additionally, sedimentological data, which integrate the environmental variations on the long term, have been collected in order to help in understanding the average biogeological functioning of the system. Depending upon its direction and speed, wind forcing induces different salinity and phytoplanktonic patterns. These generally display rather weak gradients from the entrance and the axial deepest channel towards the farthest northeastern reaches of the basin. Moreover, the ranges of salinities and... |

As part of a global investigation of foraminifera importance in the Mediterranean paralic realm, the distribution of present foraminifera in Kalloni Bay was studied through species determination and counting. From these basic data, density, species richness, Shannon Index and dominance were calculated for several stations covering the whole basin. In addition, a factorial analysis of correspondances between stations and species assemblages was performed. All these methods concur in showing that the organization of foraminifera populations follows sc principal longitudinal gradient from the entrance towards the most continental reaches and a subsidiary transverse gradient. When compared with sedimentological data, the distribution of foraminifera does not... |

The biogeological evolution of Nador lagoon over the 1982-1993 period was surveyed through water parameters, chlorophyll biomass, macrobenthos and surficial sediments. Comparison of present data with the 1982-83 ones (Guelorget et al., 1984) shows that: the general organization and functioning of the basin (water circulation, biological and sedimentological zonations) remain roughly the same, the global confinement as described by the biological zonation has slightly increased, with an extension of the high confinement zones (zones IV to VI) to the detriment of the low confinement zones, notably zones I and II, the main change has been eutrophication and a dramatic increase elf organic matter inputs and sedimentation, due to increasing urbanization and the... |
