Dairy farming plays a major role in mountainous regions of Austria, mostly due to high proportion of grasslands. In general, Austria’s dairy farming faces challenges regarding sustainability, e.g. environmental impacts, but specifically for alpine areas low productivity and dependency on direct payments are lowering sustainability. Organic farming is considered as a strategy to overcome these challenges. Considering this general background, we analysed the sustainability performance and its main drivers of organic dairy farms in mountainous regions of Austria. |

In the Austrian research project “Basic principles for breeding, multiplication and variety testing for organic agriculture” (from 2004 until 2008) novel methods for the assessment of the suitability of seed and cultivars for organic farming were developed and evaluated by an interdisciplinary co-operation of researchers, breeders and variety testers. Organic farming requires specific combinations of crop plant characters, especially seed health and resistance against seed-borne diseases. Another crucial feature is the competitive ability against weeds. Early development was found to significantly increase the competitiveness of different crop plants. The production and distribution of roots was examined for two winter wheat cultivars (Capo and Saturnus). Plants were grown in PVC tubes of 150 cm length that were placed in a field. The length of roots in 20 cm soil sections was measured at three times. Mean root length densities decreased from 7-15 cm cm-3 soil in the top 20 cm soil to 2 cm cm-3 at soil depths below 80 cm. Only slight differences were obtained for the two cultivars and between harvests. Saturnus produced relatively greater root lengths in upper soil horizons, while Capo spread its roots further down the soil profile. Maximum rooting depth was between 150 to 160 cm. |
