Última Atlantic salmon sea ranching in Ireland ArchiMer Piggins, D.j.. The four main Irish smolt farms have contributed to the development of adult salmon fishing in fixed estuarine fisheries. But the "re-catches" currently take place at an insufficient rate compared with the economic norms of a "sea-ranching" operation. One of the main limiting factors for the repopulation from farm salmon is the lower viability of farm smolts compared to wild individuals. This might be caused by a combination of physiological or behavioural deficiencies linked to the farming techniques, but also by the presence of some latent pathogenic germs on the freed smolts.
