Content of lignan, cadmium and some other chemical components in linseed and oil hemp varieties in south-western part of Finland Organic Eprints
Saastamoinen, Marketta; Pihlava, Juha-Matti; Eurola, Merja.
Lignans are phytoestrogens found ubiquitously throughout the plant kingdom and thus are also present in our diet. After ingestion lignans go through various transformations and in the end they form mammalian lignans by microbial conversion. The amount of these mammalian lignans in human body is linked to the reduced risk of various hormonal dependent cancers such as breast cancer. Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) is one of the richest sources of lignans used in the human diet. Unfortunately, flaxseed also picks up cadmium very efficiently from the soil, which has to be kept in mind when choosing what regions to cultivate it in. SDG-lignan, cadmium and lead contents were studied in linseed, flax and oil hemp variety samples. Oil hemp samples were...

ß-Glucan contents of groats of different oat cultivars in official variety, in organic cultivation, and in nitrogen fertilization trials in Finland Organic Eprints
Saastamoinen, Marketta; Hietaniemi, Veli; Pihlava, Juha-Matti; Eurola, Merja; Kontturi, Markku; Tuuri, Hannu; Niskanen, Markku; Kangas, Arjo.
ß-Glucan is a beneficial chemical compound in the diet of humans by decreasing the levels of serum cholesterol and blood glucose. The ß-glucan contents of oat groats were studied in official variety trials (1997-1999), nitrogen fertilization trials (1997-1999) and organic variety trials (1997-1998) in Finland. Eight cultivars were studied in the organic variety trials. Two of them, cultivars Puhti and Veli, were cultivated also with a conventional method at the same fields. The years 1997 and 1999 were very warm and dry and 1998 very cool and rainy. The effects of year and cultivar on ß-glucan content were significant in all three trial series. The Kolbu oat cultivar had a significantly lower ß- glucan content than other cultivars in all trials. N...

The content of phenolics in barley, oats, rye and wheat cultivars Organic Eprints
Pihlava, Juha-Matti; Reinikainen, Pekka; Hietaniemi, Veli; Kaukovirta-Norja, Anu.
According to the results, there is a great variation in the contents of phenolic compounds between various cereal cultivars. However, to have more evidence concerning the cultivar-related differences, more harvest years should be included in the study.

Buckwheat - an old crop with new health prospects Organic Eprints
Keskitalo, Marjo; Ketoja, Elise; Kontturi, Markku; Mäki, Maarit; Pihlava, Juha-Matti; Rantamäki, Pirjo; Tupasela, Tuomo.
Interest in buckwheat has incresed due to it being a valuable raw material for functional food production. It has been reported to have general beneficial effects on health. Buckwheat competes well with weeds and suffers little from other pests. This may be because buckwheat contains allelopathic compounds and its cultivation was observed to reduce weed biomass. Its soil nutritional requirements are low.
