Wake properties characterisation of marine current turbines ArchiMer
Maganga, Fabrice; Pinon, Grégory; Germain, Gregory; Rivoalen, Elie.
The hydrodynamics of a three bladed horizontal axis turbine is investigated. The performance of a turbine of 0.7 m of diameter and its wake were obtained from experiments and numerical simulations. A six components load cells is used for thrust and hydrodynamic power measurements, and Laser Doppler Velocimetry technics for wake characterisation. A three-dimensional software, taking into account the non stationary evolution of the wake generated by turbine blades is developed. The flow is discretised with particles carrying vorticity, which are advected in a Lagrangian frame. Both numerical and experimental power coefficient Cp and velocity maps were compared. Experiments and numerical data showed a satisfactory agreement in term of the shape of the wake...

Caractérisation expérimentale du sillage généré par une hydrolienne - Influence du taux de turbulence ambiant ArchiMer
Maganga, Fabrice; Germain, Gregory; Facq, Jean-valery; Gaurier, Benoit; Rivoalen, Elie; Pinon, Grégory.

Guillou, Sylvain; Filipot, Jean-francois; Thiebot, Jérôme; Germain, Gregory; Chaplain, Nicolas; Ikhennicheu, Maria; Duarte, Rui; Gaurier, Benoit; Bourgoin, Adrien; Mercier, Philippe; Ata, Riadh; Laverne, Jérôme; Benhamadouche, Sofiane; Pieterse, Aline; Maisondieu, Christophe; Poizot, Emmanuel; Poirier, Jean-charles; Auvray, Cedric; Droniou, Elois; Arramounet, Valentin; Pinon, Grégory.
Tidal turbine will be installed in area with high current and high turbulence level. A characterisation of this last is required. The aim of the project THYMOTE is to characterize and understand the generation of eddies from smaller to several tens of meters. Three technics are used: Numerical modelling, Physical modelling, field measurements. Physical and numerical modelling show clearly the appearance of the eddies close to the bottom in presence of dunes or rocks and their motion towards the free surface.

Comparison of synthetic turbulence approaches for blade element momentum theory prediction of tidal turbine performance and loads ArchiMer
Togneri, Michael; Pinon, Grégory; Carlier, Clement; Choma Bex, Camille; Masters, Ian.
Turbulence is a crucial flow phenomenon for tidal energy converters (TECs), as it influences both the peak loads they experience and their fatigue life. To best mitigate its effects we must understand both turbulence itself and how it induces loads on TECs. To that end, this paper presents the results of blade element momentum theory (BEMT) simulations of flume-scale TEC models subjected to synthetic turbulent flows. Synthetic turbulence methods produce three-dimensional flowfields from limited data, without solving the equations governing fluid motion. These flowfields are non-physical, but match key statistical properties of real turbulence and are much quicker and computationally cheaper to produce. This study employs two synthetic turbulence generation...

Experimental study of the wake of a wide wall-mounted obstacle on the behaviour of a marine current turbine ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit; Ikhennicheu, Maria; Druault, Philippe; Germain, Gregory; Facq, Jean-valery; Pinon, Grégory.
In high flow velocity areas like those suitable for marine energy application, bathymetry variations create strong velocity fluctuations in the water column. Experiments showed that wide cylindrical obstacles generate large velocity fluctuations, like those measured at sea. In order to study the effects of these fluctuations on the turbine behaviour, an experimental set-up has been developed in the circulating tank of Ifremer in Boulogne-sur-mer by positioning a cylinder and a turbine in its wake. Simultaneous PIV measurements give access to the flow velocity upstream of the turbine. Velocity and efforts are compared in terms of cross-correlation, coherence and their spectral content is studied. Results show that the turbine loads follow velocity...

Experimental study to determine flow characteristic effects on marine current turbine behaviour ArchiMer
Maganga, Fabrice; Germain, Gregory; King, Jérémy; Pinon, Grégory; Rivoalen, Elie.
This paper presents experimental results from tests carried out in the Ifremer free surface circulation flume tank. The objective of this work is to validate the numerical work conducted under a PhD programme for the characterization of flow perturbations induced by marine current turbines. For that purpose, we used a tri-bladed horizontal axis turbine. The work is dedicated to measure the behaviour of the system and to characterize the wake emitted by the turbine. The efficiency of the turbine is quantified by the measurement of the thrust and the amount of power generated by the rotor for various inflow conditions, while the wake will be characterized by Laser Doppler Velocimetry. Particular attention is paid to the flow characteristic effects (velocity...

Numerical simulation of the wake of marine current turbines with a particle method (congress) ArchiMer
Maganga, Fabrice; Pinon, Grégory; Germain, Gregory; Rivoalen, Elie.
This paper presents numerical results for the wake behind a three bladed horizontal axis turbine in a uniform free upstream current. A three-dimensional software, initially issuing from Pinon et al. [6], taking into account the non stationary evolution of the wake emitted by turbine blades is developed in order to assess the disturbances generated on the sea-bed and on the free surface. So an unsteady Lagrangian method is considered for these simulations using Vortex Method. The vortex flow is discretised with particles carrying vorticity, which are advected in a Lagrangian frame.

Three tidal turbines in interaction: An experimental study of turbulence intensity effects on wakes and turbine performance ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit; Carlier, Clement; Germain, Gregory; Pinon, Grégory; Rivoalen, Elie.
The development of marine current turbine arrays depends on the understanding of the interaction effects that exist between turbines in close proximity. Moreover, the ambient turbulence intensity also plays a major role in the behaviour of tidal turbines. Thus it is necessary to take ambient turbulence into account when studying interaction effects between several turbines. In order to highlight these interaction effects, experiments have been carried out in the IFREMER flume tank. These experiments focus on interactions between three horizontal axis turbines. This paper presents the experimental results obtained for three configurations with two ambient turbulence intensity rates. The results are presented in terms of turbine wakes and performance. The...

Vers une caractérisation réaliste des conditions de fonctionnement des hydroliennes ArchiMer
Germain, Gregory; Maganga, Fabrice; Gaurier, Benoit; Facq, Jean-valery; Bacchetti, Thomas; Pinon, Grégory; Rivoalen, Elie; Etancelin, Jean-matthieu.
This paper presents experimental results of tests carried out in order to investigate the hydrodynamics of marine current turbines and to build an experimental database used to validate the numerical developments conducted to characterize the flow perturbations induced by marine current turbines. For that purpose, we used a tri-bladed horizontal axis turbine. Particular attention is paid to the flow characteristic effects (velocity gradient, flow orientation, flow turbulence intensity level) on the performance of a 0.70 m diameter turbine. The main interest is to study how the far wake decays downstream, in order to estimate the effect produced in downstream turbines. Analyses are made from Laser Doppler Velocimeter measurements (velocity and turbulence...
