DESCRIPCION DE HUEVOS Y LARVAS DE PRIMER ESTADIO DEL GENERO GYRIOSOMUS GUERIN-MENEVILLE, 1834 (COLEOPTERA, TENEBRIONIDAE, NYCTELIINI) Gayana
Pizarro-Araya,Jaime; Jerez,Viviane; Cepeda-Pizarro,Jorge.

Biological aspects of the genus Brachistosternus (Bothriuridae) in the Atacama Desert (Chile), with the description of a new type of pedipalp macroseta Gayana
Ojanguren-Affilastro,Andrés A.; Botero-Trujillo,Ricardo; Castex,Alberto; Pizarro-Araya,Jaime.
ABSTRACT New data about several aspects of the biology of scorpions of genus Brachistosternus of the Atacama Desert are provided. Predatory techniques on tenebrionid larvae, and large spiders in their burrows are described, as well as the method used to transport large preys. The habitat of Brachistosternus mattonii Ojanguren-Affilastro 2005, by the tide line, is described for the first time. Finally a new type of pedipalp macroseta of Bothriuridae is described.

First report of an arboreal scorpion (Bothriuridae: Urophonius) from the temperate forests of southern Chile Gayana
Pizarro-Araya,Jaime; Ojanguren-Affilastro,Andrés A; Prendini,Lorenzo.
We present the first observations of an arboreal bothriurid scorpion and the first report of an arboreal scorpion from the temperate forests of southern Chile. Urophonius tumbensis Cekalovic 1981 was observed and captured with ultraviolet (UV) light at a height of up to 6 meters on trunks of Cryptocarya alba (Molina) Looser trees in the Hualpén Botanical Reserve (Bío Bío Region, Chile).

PRIMEROS REGISTROS PARA CHILE DE DOS ESPECIES DE PILOBALIA BURMEISTER, 1875 (COLEOPTERA, TENEBRIONIDAE) Gayana
Ferrú,Marcos A; Pizarro-Araya,Jaime.
In the present work, the first Chilean records of Pilobalia torresi Molinari, 1968 and Pilobalia escobari Peña, 1973 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Nycteliini) are reported. The specimens were collected by hand in Colchane (19° 16´ 60´´ S, 68° 37´ 60´´ W), in the Altiplano of the Region of Tarapacá, Chile. A redescription of the species and an environmental characterization of the collection sites are provided

Demographic study of two population outbreaks of Elasmoderus wagenknechti (Liebermann) (Orthoptera: Tristiridae) in the transitional desert of Chile Neotropical Entomology
Cepeda-Pizarro,Jorge; Vega,Solange; Vásquez,Hernán; Elgueta,Mario; Pizarro-Araya,Jaime.
Under certain environmental conditions, several species of grasshoppers inhabiting rangeland areas (e.g., inter-valleys) of the Chilean transitional desert can irrupt demographically. One of them is Elasmoderus wagenknechti (Liebermann), an endemic species. We studied two outbreaks occurred in 1996 and 1999. The objectives of the research were to (i) estimate some demographic parameters associated with the aforementioned events, and (ii) compare between them the population parameters. The parameters we studied were density (ind/m²), sexual proportion, female fertility (i.e., eggs/female), and the relationship eggs/female versus female size. Density (ind/m²) ranged from 0.2 to 0.4 in 1996 and from 0.5 to 0.6 in 1999. ANOVA-tests registered differences in...

Diversidad taxonómica y denso-actividad de solífugos (Arachnida: Solifugae) asociados a un ecosistema desértico costero del centro norte de Chile Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Valdivia,Daniel E.; Pizarro-Araya,Jaime; Cepeda-Pizarro,Jorge; Ojanguren-Affilastro,Andrés A..

Biological vulnerability in the Elqui Valley (Coquimbo Region, Chile) to economically important arthropods Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Pizarro-Araya,Jaime; Cepeda-Pizarro,Jorge; Barriga,Juan E; Bodini,Andrés.
Current climate conditions in north-central Chile (25057'-32013'S,71043'-68°16'W)are characterized by increasing temperatures and decreasing rainfall. Global warming is expected to alter the hydrology and ecoclimatic characteristics of north-central basins with multiple effects, including changes in plant and arthropod phenology and biodiversity. Among these basins, the Elqui Valley (29°50'S, 70°52'W) stands out for its large population and the economic importance of tourism and agriculture. The taxonomic composition of agriculturally and medically important arthropods was studied in three locations in the Elqui Valley by manual capture of specimens and interviews with farmers, agricultural workers, and local leaders. Out of a total of 145 species of...
