The innovative concept of combining full-time grazing with automatic milking generates various questions concerning herd management. Especially the calving period influences the efficiency of pasture use as well as the degree of energy imbalances of cows. Calving during grazing period leads to reduced milk yields in the first period of lactation, pointing out nutrient deficiencies. Therefore individual calving strategies are needed to optimize pasture exploitation and to increase milk production.
