Analysing Linkages between Strategy, Performance, Management Structure and Culture in the Spanish Fresh Produce Industry AgEcon
Martinez, Marian Garcia; Poole, Nigel D..
This article reports the results of an industry-level study that seeks to identify empirical regularities between firm strategy, management style, organisational structure and performance in the Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable (fresh produce) industry using strategic group analysis. Groups were formed from key dimensions reflecting firms' strategic orientations. Performance levels did not differ systematically between strategic groups, but performance was found to be influenced by the alignment between entrepreneurial culture and organisational structure. A move towards greater flexibility and/or adopting an entrepreneurial style are both likely to contribute to an improvement in the overall performance of the firm.

Benchmarking International Food Safety Performance in the Fresh Produce Sector AgEcon
Garcia Martinez, Marian; Poole, Nigel D.; Briz, Julian; de Felipe, Isabel; Yalcin, Ismet; Koc, A. Ali; Messaho, Driss.
The objective of this paper is to assess food systems performance in Mediterranean countries to deliver safe food (fresh produce), and to demonstrate the capacity to the satisfaction of private customers and public regulators. To that end, an international benchmarking exercise was developed to assess the quality performance gap in food standards across countries and food systems. The study was carried out in three Mediterranean countries: Spain, Morocco and Turkey and involved an audit of the citrus and tomatoes supply chains, and a comparison with existing "best practice" in infrastructure and management practices at both firm and industry level. The aim was to identify the gaps between fresh produce exporters and a best practice company. To that end,...

CRITICAL LINKAGES: LIVELIHOODS, MARKETS AND INSTITUTIONS AgEcon
Dorward, Andrew; Poole, Nigel D.; Morrison, Jamie; Kydd, Jonathan; Urey, Ian.
The benefits of livelihoods thinking and approaches are widely recognised. This paper focuses on an important gap in much of the conceptualisation and application of "livelihood approaches", a lack of emphasis on markets and their roles in livelihood development and poverty reduction. The omission is important as it can lead to failure to identify and act on market opportunities and constraints and on related institutional issues. The paper explores these arguments in more detail and suggests ways in which they may be addressed before concluding with a brief illustration of the application of the paper's arguments to a desk study on rural market development in Africa.

Martinez-Carrasco, Laura; Vidal, Fernando; Poole, Nigel D..

Information and WTP: Fruit Quality Perceptions and Consumer Satisfaction AgEcon
Poole, Nigel D.; Martinez-Carrasco, Laura.
Consumers face information problems in choosing certain types of foods that best match their preferences and assure satisfaction. For fresh fruits, expectations about the easting experience cannot be assured through external inspection of the product at the time of purchase, nor necessarily through experience. Limited information provided by the supply industry, unexploited product differentiation by marketers, and lack of awareness among consumers of quality attributes, of the intrinsic heterogeneity of fresh produce, can lead to reduced consumer satisfaction, which in turn affects consumption patterns and attenuates the impact of policy initiatives to improve diet and health. The research reported here employed the second price Vickrey experimental...

Creating Value for Competitive Advantage in Supply Chain Relationships: The Case of the Sri Lankan Tea Industry AgEcon
Kasturiratne, Dulekha; Poole, Nigel D..
The declining competitiveness of the Sri Lankan tea industry is an example of shifting competitive advantage in agribusiness. This research uses a case study approach to identify the specific role of information and communication on exporter/importer relationships within the tea supply chain, and the impact on value addition, channel member performance and competitive advantage in the Sri Lankan tea industry. The main primary data collection was conducted through thirty face-to-face executive interviews in Sri Lanka using an extensive semi-structured interview guide. Analyses of the information from the interviews were qualitative in nature. Results demonstrated how good information and communication between exporters and importers promote joint decision...
