In 2014, under the second cycle of WFD monitoring the "subtidal macroalgae" parameter is calculated on 3 stations of the “Basque coast” water body. Complementary metric have been obtained for the first time, as for all the Channel / Atlantic coast. Their aim is to optimize the information collected to assess the ecological status of water bodies. The calculation of the Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR) classify this water body as "Good" as in 2013 with a tendency to improve notation. In 2013, under the WFD monitoring the "subtidal macroalgae" parameter is calculated on 3 stations of the “Basque coast” water body. The classification for this parameter is "good", and scores obtained are higher than the previous years. This observation is mainly based on the fact that deeper bathymetric levels were sampled and allowed to better characterize belts and associated communities. The effects of bad spring weather conditions on algae growth are not visible at the time of sampling. After these first three sampling campains improvements and additions to the protocol are proposed to provide information for European directives.
