This paper analyzes the beef cattle sector located in the dehesa agro-ecosystem (SW Spain). The objective is to detect the more sustainable systems based on the environmental dimension of sustainability comparing three production models. RESULTS: organic farms contribute to environmental stability to a greater extent than conventional ones due to the implementation of certain farming practices. Organic farms (mainly the 'Organic 2' group of farms) do not use pesticides nor chemical fertilizers and present greater integration of livestock species, crops and trees, which has positive environmental and economic effects. This integration allows better use of food resources and conservation of the heterogeneity of landscapes, conserving natural resources and... |

Extensive livestock production systems have faced socio-economic factors (such as the loss of profitability and competitiveness) that have led to modifications in their management and structure. The main changes have been the abandonment of grazing, the increase in the use of external feed, the abandonment of farms, and the intensification of the systems. The dehesa is the consequence of human intervention in the natural Mediterranean forest. Due to this, the conservation of this ecosystem depends on the use of appropriate agricultural practices (Gaspar et al., 2007). Thus small changes in the production systems may have a great impact on its conservation and on the rural population. As consequence, the intensification of farms and the high prices of... |

Livestock farming systems of the Spanish rangelands (dehesas) are traditional systems characteristic of the Iberian Peninsula where native herbaceous vegetation and evergreen species of Quercus provide the foundation for extensive beef farming enterprises. Dehesas are considered to be the most extensive, diverse, and low-intensity land use systems in Europe. Nevertheless, in the last twenty years, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has produced some important effects in these systems, specially an increase of the stocking rate. Although CAP policies contributed to stabilizing income in dehesa farms, they also produced loss of sustainability. Nevertheless, EU subsidies have become a key element in these enterprises, accounting for as much as 30% of the... |

Beef pasture-based systems of Europe, especially those located in disfavored areas, play a key role in the maintenance of the ecosystems and rural population. However, they suffer from low competitiveness. In this sense, the design of improvement measures is needed. Due to this, this work has two objectives: (1) to assess the competitiveness of the beef pasture-based systems of the Spanish rangelands ('dehesas'); (2) to design improvement measures. For this purpose, a Competitiveness Index (CI) was created on the basis of technical and economic indicators. According to this index, farms were classified in three groups (1 = highly competitive but very dependent on subsidies; 2 = medium level of competitiveness; 3 = low competitiveness but low dependence on... |

The livestock sector must be redesigned in order to achieve food security sustainably. Several authors have argued that organic farming may contribute positively in this sense. However, the externalities of the organic livestock systems are influenced by several factors. Due to this, the aim of this paper is to shed light on the needs and perspective of the organic beef cattle farms located in the 'dehesa' ecosystem (SW Spain). For this purpose, we created the 'Feasibility of Success Index' (FSI) by using indicators that took into account the context of the extensive livestock systems located in the Mediterranean basin. Two groups of organic farms were analyzed: farms that sold calves at weaning age a conventional ones (Organic); farms that fattened and... |
