Rentabilität und Lebensqualität auf Bio-Milchviehbetrieben: ein Paradoxon? Organic Eprints
Strauss, Agnes; Kirner, Leopold; Neumayr, Christoph; Quendler, Elisabeth.
This study examines a possible relationship between the economic key data of dairy farms and the family members’ subjective assessment of their perceived quality of life. Seven organic dairy farms were evaluated as part of the on-going project, “Integrative assessment of ecological, economic and social-ethic characteristics of sustainability of agricultural production systems in dairy farming”. Total costs, entrepreneurial profit and return on labour were chosen as key data for rentability. Job satisfaction, wealth in time and health were selected to describe the quality of life. The results confirm that bigger farms with more dairy cows operate more cost efficiently, but the farm with the most dairy cows was not the most successful economically. It was...

Prevention aspects for avoiding run-over incidents with self-propelled agricultural machinery CIGR Journal
Mayrhofer, Hannes; Quendler, Elisabeth; Boxberger, Josef.
Run-overs are one of the most common incident scenarios with tractors, self-propelled harvesting and load transportation machines in Austrian agriculture.  The aim of the study was to describe sustainable prevention measures against these kinds of incidents.  For this purpose, the compliance with safety standards and directives in new machinery was investigated, currently available prevention equipment was identified and manufacturers were asked about the difficulties in the implementation of prevention measures against run-overs in new vehicles.  In addition, a literature and internet research was done.  The evaluation of new machines showed that self-propelled harvesting machines and tractors tended to be more frequently equipped with relevant safety...

Prevention aspects for avoiding rollover incidents together for tractors, self-propelled harvesting and material handling machinery CIGR Journal
Mayrhofer, Hannes; Quendler, Elisabeth; Boxberger, Josef.
Abstract: Tractors, self-propelled harvesting and material handling machines are the most commonly used self-propelled machineries in Austrian agriculture that have similarities in main rollover incident causes.  The aim of this study was to present sustainable prevention measures against rollovers together for tractors, self-propelled harvesting and material handling machinery based on a new machine evaluation, manufacturer surveys and a literature research.  New machines were investigated concerning their compliance with legal regulations and concerning their current rollover prevention equipment.  By interviewing manufacturers of tractors, self-propelled harvesting machinery and material handling machinery, the challenges with implementing safety...

Scenarios and causes of rollover incidents with self-propelled agricultural machinery in Austria CIGR Journal
Mayrhofer, Hannes; Quendler, Elisabeth; Boxberger, Josef.
Rollovers are the most common incidents with tractors, self-propelled harvesting and agricultural materials handling machinery in Austrian agriculture.  The precise identification of rollover incident scenarios and causes with these vehicles is the aim of the study. In order to achieve this, incident victims were interviewed and incident reports were analysed.  To derive information from report and interview material the qualitative content analysis was used.  The analysis showed that rollovers with tractors, self-propelled harvesting machinery and materials handling machinery showed similarities in terms of causes, circumstances and consequences although they are quite different in vehicle concept, operation and use.  The rollovers were mostly influenced...

Accident at work with fertilizer distributors in Austrian agriculture CIGR Journal
Kogler, Robert; Quendler, Elisabeth; Boxberger, Josef.
Accidents with fertilizer distributors at work happen in the Austrian agriculture every year.  In accordance with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the standards ISO 4254-1 and DIN EN 14017, fertilizer distributors undergo a risk assessment before construction and market entry to ensure their complying with these legal recommendations and to eliminate largely the risk of injury for the operators.  To determine the accident scenarios, causes, and technical solutions, a narrative analysis of 14 reports of accidents that led to moderate and serious injuries from 2008 to 2010 was done, eight victims interviewed, and seven accident machines and eight new ones, which were sold in 2013, evaluated according to applicable regulations.  Mostly farm managers were...
