The North Atlantic Ocean is a major sink region for atmospheric CO2 and contributes to the storage of anthropogenic carbon (Cant). While there is general agreement that the intensity of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) modulates uptake, transport and storage of Cant in the North Atlantic Subpolar Ocean, processes controlling their recent variability and evolution over the 21st century remain uncertain. This study investigates the relationship between transport, air-sea flux and storage rate of Cant in the North Atlantic Subpolar Ocean over the past 53 years. Its relies on the combined analysis of a multiannual in situ data set and outputs from a global biogeochemical ocean general circulation model (NEMO-PISCES) at 1/2 degrees spatial... |

This paper presents the SURATLANT data set (SURveillance ATLANTique). It consists of individual data of temperature, salinity, parameters of the carbonate system, nutrients, and water stable isotopes (delta O-18 and delta D) collected mostly from ships of opportunity since 1993 along transects between Iceland and New-foundland (https://doi.org/10.17882/54517). We discuss how the data are validated and qualified, their accuracy, and the overall characteristics of the data set. The data are used to reconstruct seasonal cycles and interannual anomalies, in particular of sea surface salinity (S SS); inorganic nutrients; dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC); and its isotopic composition delta C-13(DIC), total alkalinity (A(t)), and water isotope concentrations.... |

Delayed Mode analysis was performed for deep Arvor floats. First, salinity and temperature profiles were compared to nearby historical CTD profiles. Real time QC flags were verified and modified if necessary. The OW method was run to estimate a salinity offset or/and a salinity drift using historical CTD profiles as a reference database. Finally, if necessary, the corrections were applied and corrected files were sent to the Coriolis DAC. |

Argo, the international array of profiling floats, is a major component of the global ocean and climate observing system. In 2010, the NAOS (Novel Argo Observing System) project was selected as part of the French “Investissements d’Avenir” Equipex program. The objectives of NAOS were to consolidate the French contribution to Argo’s core mission (global temperature and salinity measurements down to 2000 m), and also to develop the future generation of French Argo profiling floats and prepare the next phase of the Argo program with an extension to the deep ocean (Deep Argo), biogeochemistry (BGC-Argo) and polar seas. This paper summarizes how NAOS has met its objectives. The project significantly boosted France’s contribution to Argo’s core mission by... |
