Isolated trees with high crown coverage and densities increase pasture seed rain Acta Botanica
Vergne,Driélli Carvalho; Almeida,Hisaias Souza; Campos,Caroline Cambraia Furtado; Martins,Natália. S.; Ramos,Flavio Nunes.
ABSTRACT Pasture and crop lands restrict seed dispersal near remnant forest fragments, especially by restricting the movements of dispersal agents and limiting propagule dispersal. Some factors can improve seed dispersal in open areas, such as the presence of high numbers of isolated trees in close proximity to forest fragments. We sought to determine if: (i) the structural characteristics and (ii) densities of isolated trees in pasture lands, and (iii) their distances from the forest fragments, influence seed dispersal. We installed 18 seed traps in each of six pastures (total=108 traps) bordering forest fragments distributed over 6 distance classes from the forest edges (0, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 m). We determined the characteristics of the plants...

Spatial distribution of seeds and juveniles of Enterolobium glaziovii Bentham (Leguminosae, Mimosoideae) in the Atlantic forest, Brazil Acta Botanica
Ramos,Flavio Nunes; Matos,Dalva M. Silva; Santos,Flavio A.M..
The spatial distribution of fruits and juveniles of Enterolobium glaziovii Bentham were evaluated in four circular plots of 30 m radius, centered around reproductive individuals to determine whether the size of the parental crowns, topography, and canopy coverage influence these patterns. Each crown was subdivided into eight irregular triangles and the area of each was calculated. Each plot was subdivided into four sub-plots, two of them in an up-slope direction, and the other two in a down-slope direction. The canopy coverage for each plot was estimated at breast height (1.30 m) and at ground level, every three months during 1998. The numbers of fruits and juveniles of E. glaziovii were recorded. Although there were more fruit under the parental crown...

Ontogeny, allometry and architecture of Psychotria tenuinervis (Rubiaceae) Acta Botanica
Rosseto,Vanessa; Carneiro,Magda Silva; Ramos,Flavio Nunes; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës dos.
We evaluated the ontogeny of the understory shrub Psychotria tenuinervis Müll.Arg., considering morphological and morphometric characters. Four ontogenetic stages were identified: seedling, juvenile, immature and adult (vegetative and reproductive phases). Size measurements and allometric relationships of the stem and crown were compared between the immature and adult stages. Diameter and total height of the stem, as well as crown depth and width, increased throughout the ontogenetic stages and differed among immature, vegetative adult and reproductive adult individuals. The number of branches was lower in immature individuals than in vegetative and reproductive adult individuals but did not differ between the last two. The bifurcation ratio did not vary...

Floral biology and breeding system of Psychotria tenuinervis Muell. Arg. (Rubiaceae) in the Atlantic rain forest, SE Brazil Acta Botanica
Virillo,Carolina Bernucci; Ramos,Flavio Nunes; Castro,Cibele Cardoso de; Semir,João.
(Floral biology and breeding system oi Psychotria tenuinervis Muell. Arg. (Rubiaceae) in the Atlantic rain forest, SE Brazil). The aim of this study was to investigate pollination biology, floral morphometry, morph ratio and breeding system oiPsychotria tenuinervis in an area of Atlantic rain forest in southeastern Brazil. Pollination biology was studied based on focal observations and the breeding system was determined using controlled crosses; data on flower production and floral morphometry were compared between the two floral morphs. Flower production by the two floral morphs was similar, with flowers being reciprocally herkogamous, diurnal and pollinated at similar frequencies, mainly by medium-sized bees. Corolla length and diameter, as well as...

Microclimate of Atlantic forest fragments: regional and local scale heterogeneity BABT
Ramos,Flavio Nunes; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës.
The aim of this work was to investigate whether (i) the organisms within different fragments, on regional scale (separated by up to 100 km), could be submitted to similar climatic conditions (rainfall and temperature), and whether (ii) the edge formation in forest fragments could stimulate microclimatic changes (canopy cover, air temperature and soil humidity), on local scale. The organisms within different fragments, on regional scale, were submitted to different climatic conditions, and the edge formation in the forest fragment stimulated microclimatic changes, on local scale, although in a heterogenic way. Not just the distance from the edge influenced the microclimatic differences. Probably, the edge age, location, the matrix structure, as well as, gap...
