Rises in the water level of the Roya, the closest river to Monaco, are followed by a lowering of salinity in the coastal area that is all the more intense and synchronous as we near the shore and the river mouth, as well as at the sea surface. By comparing the mean salinity six miles offshore with that of the bay, between 1976 and 1983, it is found that the fresh water volume contained in the first metre below the surface of the bay is equivalent to the cumulative flow of the Roya in three hours. Studies of lagged correlations between the flow of the Roya and salinity measured in the bay and further offshore indicate that during hot and calm weather the mixing area between fresh water and sea water spreads to a greater extent seawards and is more... |
