This research evaluates the main characteristics considered in commodity-procurement decisions made by food manufacturers. Procurement characteristics are examined and a framework is developed which classifies procurement characteristics into three categories: product constraints, company constraints, and service constraints. A case-study approach is used to determine the importance of various procurement characteristics and their impact on the buyer’s procurement-mechanism choice. The research also examines the strategic role that a commodity-procurement department plays within a corporation and how that role relates to the three commodity-procurement decision classifications. |

Several characteristics of biotech industry structure follow cyclical patterns. Mergers and acquisitions activity shows cyclical behavior, with peaks from 1988-92 and 1996-97 and a valley from 1993-95. The ratio of large-firm to small-firm field trials, and the Herfindahl-Hirshmann concentration index, move pro-cyclically with M&A activity. This paper develops a formal, dynamic, neo-Schumpeterian model of endogenous R&D and innovation. The model generalizes and extends the literature on biotech industry concentration. For specified parameter values, the out-of-steady-state dynamics are examined, and shown to generate model behavior which is consistent with empirical descriptions of biotech concentration and R&D-activity cycles. |

An important characteristic of agricultural commodity markets is the extent to which those markets respond to price changes in related markets. Given a competitive market structure, the Law of One Price (LOP) postulates that spatial price relationships are determined by transfer cost1 among regions and that spatial arbitrage restores market equilibrium (Tomek and Robinson, 2003). Spatial price relationships are of particular relevance to farmers in designing market strategies. Measurements of spatial price relationships provide insights about the dynamics of price movements, thus increasing understanding of likely behavior of supply or demand areas in the market (Jordan and Van Sickle, 1998). For example, knowledge of which regions lead prices, the... |

We use a case study approach to determine the primary factors affecting food manufacturers' commodity procurement decisions, as well as to examine the strategic nature of commodity procurement departments. The research fills a gap in both the commodity and procurement literature. A large literature exists on commodity marketing; however, very little exists on the topic of commodity procurement. Existing procurement literature tends to focus on non-commodity products rather than commodity products. The results suggest a model for the strategic role of commodity procurement departments within food manufacturers. The initial procurement strategy must be supply maintenance, which once accomplished, allows the commodity procurement department to progress... |

Today is a time of dynamic structural change in the agri-food system that brings new challenges to producers. This change is not unique to any particular production sector within the system, nor is it restricted to one level within the agri-food marketing chain. This testimony describes the current status of concentration and consolidation in agri-food markets. In addition, it presents discussion regarding the driving forces behind this structural change, as well a brief discussion of implications for the future. |

A review of recent literature reflects the development of several deterministic nonparametric market power tests. We use Monte Carlo experiments to evaluate the veracity of four monopolistic and four monopsonistic market power tests that use the deterministic nonparametric approach. The experiments are implemented using data from ten known market structures. When results are compared to Raper, Love, and Shumway's (1999) findings concerning parametric market power tests in the Bresnahan-Lau tradition, we find that the parametric tests perform well while only two of the nonparametric tests appear able to identify market power. |
