Xylitol inhibits J774A.1 macrophage adhesion in vitro BABT
Ferreira,Aline Siqueira; Souza,Maria Aparecida de; Raposo,Nádia Rezende Barbosa; Ferreira,Ana Paula; Silva,Silvio Silvério da.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of xylitol on J774A.1 macrophage adhesion. Adhesion consisted of a three-hour interval, at room temperature, followed by washing and cell incubation at 37ºC/5% CO2/ 48h. Xylitol was used to treat the cells either before (for 24h) or after the cell incubation (for 48h) at 5% as final concentration in both the situations. It was found that xylitol was effective in preventing the adhesion in both the conditions in spite of the former being 100-fold greater and significant (p < 0.001). The results pointed to an important xylitol action on macrophage adhesion, which should be further investigated as an inflammatory control.

In vitro inhibition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa adhesion by Xylitol BABT
Sousa,Letícia Pinheiro de; Silva,Annelisa Farah da; Calil,Natalia Oliveira; Oliveira,Murilo Gomes; Silva,Silvio Silvério da; Raposo,Nádia Rezende Barbosa.
This study evaluated, in vitro, the antimicrobial activity and the anti-adherent property of xylitol (0.5, 2.5 and 5.0%, w/v) on two Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains (ATCC 9027 and clinical). The assay of antimicrobial activity was performed to determine a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the adhesion test was performed, by which the parameters regarding, growth in the culture medium, number of colony forming units (CFUs) released and slide evaluation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were analyzed. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was employed for statistical analysis. Results showed that xylitol had no antimicrobial activity on these strains; however, the inhibition of bacterial adherence was observed in microphotographs...

In vitro inhibition of adhesion of Escherichia coli strains by Xylitol BABT
Silva,Annelisa Farah da; Suzuki,Érika Yoko; Ferreira,Aline Siqueira; Oliveira,Murilo Gomes; Silva,Sílvio Silvério da; Raposo,Nádia Rezende Barbosa.
The present study aimed to evaluate xylitol's antimicrobial and anti-adherence activities on Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739) and on another clinical strain enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC). In vitro minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test and adhesion assays were performed using 0.5, 2.5 and 5.0% xylitol. It was found that xylitol did not have antimicrobial properties on these strains. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that the slides treated with xylitol had a significant reduction in the number of bacilli and the inhibition of microbial adhesion was probably the xylitol's mechanism of action. Xylitol could be a possible alternative on the control of E. coli infections.

In vitro antifungal activity of organic compounds derived from amino alcohols against onychomycosis BJM
Caneschi,César Augusto; Almeida,Angelina Maria de; Martins,Francislene Juliana; Hyaric,Mireille Le; Oliveira,Manoel Marques Evangelista; Macedo,Gilson Costa; Almeida,Mauro Vieira de; Raposo,Nádia Rezende Barbosa.
Abstract Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail caused by high densities of filamentous fungi and yeasts. Treatment for this illness is long-term, and recurrences are frequently detected. This study evaluated in vitro antifungal activities of 12 organic compounds derived from amino alcohols against standard fungal strains, such as Trichophyton rubrum CCT 5507 URM 1666, Trichophyton mentagrophytes ATCC 11481, and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. The antifungal compounds were synthesized from p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (4a-4f) and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (9a-9f). Minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum fungicidal concentrations were determined according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute protocols M38-A2, M27-A3, and M27-S4. The amine series...

Mushroom tyrosinase inhibitory activity and major fatty acid constituents of Amazonian native flora oils BJPS
Teixeira,Raquel da Silva; Rocha,Paula Rafaela; Polonini,Hudson Caetano; Brandão,Marcos Antônio Fernandes; Chaves,Maria das Graças Afonso Miranda; Raposo,Nádia Rezende Barbosa.
In order to treat hyperpigmentation-related problems, there has been a global trend in developing cosmetics claiming to have skin-whitening properties, which act by inhibiting melanin biosynthesis. The objective of this work was to evaluate the in vitro mushroom tyrosinase inhibitory activity of five Amazonian native flora oils, and so to verify the possibility of their incorporation into cosmetic products. In addition, the fatty acid composition of the essential oils was determined by gas chromatography-flame ionisation detection in order to determine the main components of these oils. The tyrosinase inhibitory activity of the tested oils was found to be in the following order: açaí (IA50 = 66.08 µg mL-1) > tucumã > patauá > pracaxi > castanha...
