The report provides information on the importance of Caridean shrimps in the food of juvenile Trigla species (gurnard), Agonus cataphractus (hook-nose) and Liparis liparis (sea snail) in the Belgian coastal waters, and gives some biometric data related to stomach content and composition. The results show the importance of Caridean shrimps, especially Crangon crangon, as a food source for perciform fish species in inshore waters. The records of the chameleon prawn, Hippolyte varians in fish stomachs and in trawl and grab samples are compared, and the actual knowledge on the distribution and abundance of this shrimp species is discussed. |

In 1973 the commercial shrimp catches reached the very high level of 1615 tons. This represented the highest catch since 1956 and twice the landings of 1971 or 1972. The average engine-power of the vessels was 147.3 hp and the average catch per hour fishing was 23.6 kg. The catch curve shows the same pattern as the previous years, with a marked peak in October. This peak however was in 1973 (51 kg/ hour fishing) clearly much higher than in 1971 (33 kg/hour fishing) or in 1972 (30 kg/hour fishing). The experimental shrimp fishery was carried out by the RV Hinders. On the fishing ground of the Westdiep five stations were monthly sampled with an otter trawl. The shrimp catches were divided into two length classes (smaller or larger than 54... |

The report describes the Belgian Nephrops directed fishery in the Central North Sea (Botney Gut-Silver Pit area) and analyzes the diurnal variations in CPUE and catch composition of several commercial Nephrops trawlers operating in this area. Peak CPUE-values were generally obtained after dawn and before dusk. Some anomalies however did occur. These are discussed in relation to the natural variations in light intensity on the sea floor and the food requirements of Nephrops. There was no evidence of significant changes in the length composition of Nephros taken at different times of the day. The data even suggest that all size groups of Nephros respond in the same... |

The objectives of the investigations comprise three parts: a) an accurate determination of the abundance and biomass of the post-larval Crangon crangon (L.) population in the Belgian coastal waters ; b) a quantitative analysis on a yearly basis of the consumption and production by this population, including a detailed description of the yearly fishery- and predation mortality; c) the formulation of a quantitative consumption-production-model which describes the trophic relationships of the population of postlarval Crangon crangon (L.). Method: The inventory of the biotic and abiotic factors, which influence the abundance and biomass of the population of post larval Crangon crangon (L.), leads to a... |

Bivalves and gastropods landed in Belgium are taken as a by-catch of fisheries targeting finfish or crustaceans, and the nation has never had specialized molluscan fisheries. Species landed consist mainly of whelk, Buccinum undatum; and scallops, Pecten maximus and Chlamys spp. Long-term trends in the landings of mollusks are closely related to long-term changes in fleet and vessel size, gear types used, fishing grounds and target species, and demand on the local market. In the 1950' s, the annual landings of whelk fluctuated between 80 and 200 t, while those of scallop were insubstantial. Since then, the landings gradually rose to record figures of 678 t for whelk and 762 t for scallop in the... |
