A molecular phylogenetic framework for the Ergalataxinae (Neogastropoda: Muricidae) ArchiMer

The validity of the muricid subfamily Ergalataxinae has recently been confirmed with molecular data, but its composition and the relationships among its constituent genera remain unclear. In order to investigate this, we use four genes (28S rRNA, 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) to construct a Bayesian phylogeny of 52 ergalataxine species in 18 genera, representing c. 40 of the currently accepted species and 86 of the genera. This is the most complete phylogeny of this taxonomically confusing subfamily yet produced. Our results indicate the polyphyly of many traditional genera, including Morula, Pascula and Orania. Spatial distribution of discards in mixed fisheries: species trade-offs, potential spatial avoidance and national contrasts ArchiMer

Since 2015, the European Union gradually implemented the landing obligation (LO). This prohibits at-sea discarding of species under total allowable catch management. Spatiotemporal avoidance strategies and increasing fishing gear selectivity are two complementary levers that could help fishers in reducing the amount of discards. The objective of this paper is to analyse discarding practices of demersal mixed fisheries in the central part of the Celtic Sea to inform on potential spatial avoidance strategies of unwanted catches in a multi-species context. Systematic revision of the living species of Bullidae (Mollusca : Gastropoda : Cephalaspidea), with a molecular phylogenetic analysis ArchiMer

Bullidae are a worldwide family of marine shelled cephalaspidean gastropods with a mainly tropical distribution, but also with some representatives in temperate waters. The taxonomy of the group has in the past been based only on shell characters, and the few anatomical accounts available have not addressed more than one to three species, so there has been no agreement about the number of valid species. Seventy-two specific names and 16 varietal names have been proposed worldwide. As a result of the introduction of the Landing Obligation in European fisheries there is a need to equip industry with the tools and knowledge to avoid unwanted catches. Optimising fishing practices in terms of time and location fished have been acknowledged as being important in modulating catch composition. Mapping techniques used to identify and manage the spatio-temporal nature of bycatch, however, remain underutilized.
