Spatial patterns of biodiversity in the Black Sea: An assessment using benthic polychaetes IBSS Repository
Surugiu V.; Revkov N.; Todorova V.; Papageorgiou N.; Valavanis V.D.; Arvanitidis C..
The current study broadens the biodiversity information available for the Black Sea and neighbouring regions and improves our knowledge about the polychaete biogeographic patterns to be discerned in them. There appears to be a well-defined zoogeocline from the Marmara Sea and Bosphorus Strait to the inner parts of the region (Azov Sea), depicted both as a multivariate pattern and in terms of species (or taxa) numbers. The emergent multivariate pattern complies, to a certain extent, with Jakubova’s (1935) views: three main sectors can be defined in the basin: (a) Prebosphoric, (b) the Black Sea and, (c) the Azov Sea, whereas the Bosphorus Strait and Marmara Sea show less faunal affinities with the aforementioned sectors. Patterns derived both from the...

Macrozoobenthos Community Structure during Four Seasons in Kuwait Bay IBSS Repository
Al-Rifaie K.; Al-Yamani F.; Lennox A.; Boltachova N.; Revkov N.; Grintsov V.; Kolesnikova E.; Murina V..
The paper investigates the taxonomic composition, diversity and abundance of macrozoobenthos community in Kuwait Bay subtidal zone during different seasons of the year. Material for the study was collected in December 2009, and in March, June and September 2010 from five stations in Kuwait Bay. Seasonal and spatial variability was detected in the measured oceanographic parameters (salinity, temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, pH and turbidity) indicating their dynamic nature. A total of 200 species of macrozoobenthos and representatives of higher taxonomic groups belonging to 10 phyla have been identified from Kuwait’s Bay marine environment. The results indicated that species number was largest in polychaetes, gastropods, and bivalved mollusks. The abundance...

Winter species composition, diversity and abundance of macrozoobenthos in Kuwait’s waters, Arabian Gulf IBSS Repository
Al-Yamani F.; Boltachova N.; Revkov N.; Makarov M.; Grintsov V.; Kolesnikova E.; Murina G.-V..
The paper describes the structure of macrozoobenthos inhabiting Kuwait’s waters (northwestern Arabian Gulf). Material for the study was collected from 17 stations in December 2004. A total of 270 species of macrozoobenthos and representatives of higher taxonomic groups belonging to 10 phyla were recorded and identified. Species diversity was highest in polychaetes, gastropods, bivalved molluscs and crustaceans (83, 51, 52 and 38 species, respectively). Quantitative estimates of macrozoobenthos was studied in this geographic region for the first time. In the depth of 2–20 m the abundance of macrozoobenthos averaged 795 ind./m2. Polychaetes, gastropods and crustaceans prevailed in the sublittoral zone. In assessing species diversity the ecological indices of...
