Bentley, D.; Dupont, J.; Richard, A..
(fig. 1).

Oudard, E.; L'Hopitault, J.c.; Delattre, J.m.; Lemaire, J.; Janquin, M.a.; Degros, N.; Richard, A..

Viollier, M.; Bentley, D.; Richard, A..

Prygiel, Jean; Quisthoudt, C.; Richard, A..

Recruitment of meroplanktonic larvae in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Belgrano, A.; Vincx, M.; Dewarumez, J.-M.; Richard, A.; Craeymeersch, J.A.; Heip, C.H.R..
The density distribution of meroplanktonic larvae is compared with the density distribution of adults in the benthos, at five coastal stations in the Southern Bight of the North Sea (<i>Abra alba</i> community). Plankton communities were sampled during one tidal cycle, along a buoy traject or at a fixed point; southern and northern locations, 250 m from each central sampling point, have been investigated too. Benthos samples were taken only at the central points of this traject. Meroplankton consisted of polychaete larvae (9 families) and bivalve and echinoderm larvae. The highest density values of these larvae (6,400 ind.10.25 m2) are found on the southern sites of each traject (closest to the coastline). The highest...

The cycle of activity in the accessory nidamental glands from cephalopods OMA
Richard, A.; Van den Branden, C.; Decleir, W..
The reproductive system of female cephalopods includes a glandular system (oviduct glands and nidamental glands), which develops considerably during sexual maturation and which plays an important part in the formation of the different egg membranes. It is generally uncoloured. An exception are the nidamental glands in <i>Nautilus pompilius</i> which are composed of opaque yellowish or yellowish-green tissue (Ref. 1). Moreover all Sepioidea and Myopsida and <i>Ctenopteryx</i>, a species belonging to the Oegopsida (Ref.2) possess accessory nidamental glands. The most striking property of these glands is their intense coloration varying from yellow to orange and red. This paper is a comparative study of the accessory nidamental glands...

The differentiation of blood proteins during ontogeny in <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. OMA
Decleir, W.; Lemaire, J.; Richard, A..
1. Blood from embryos, young animals and adult <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. has been analysed by an ultramicroelectrophoretic technique.2. During the differentiation of a very small embryo into a 2-month-old animal, we have found eleven different protein fractions. 3. All these proteins have been identified as hemocyanin by histochemical tests. 4. The possible origin of the embryonic, young and adult hemocyanins is discussed.

L'hémocyanine et la glande branchiale de <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. (Mollusque Céphalopode) OMA
Decleir, W.; Richard, A.; Lemaire, J.; Wolf, G..
The branchial gland from the cuttlefish (cephalopod mollusc) consists of extensively irrigated tissue, which shows a typical ultrastructure of protein-secreting cells: prominent nucleolus, elaborate system of granular endoplasmic reticulum and active Golgi apparatus. The possible hemopoietic role of the gland is sustained by our biochemical results.

A study of the orange-red pigment from the accessory nidamental glands of the cephalopod <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. OMA
Decleir, W.; Richard, A..
In adult female cuttlefish an orange-red pigment concentrates in the accessory nidamental glands. This pigment is tightly bound to granules which are actively secreted by the glands. The only way to dissolve the pigment is an incubation in 40 % NaOH. Afterwards the pigment becomes readily soluble in most organic solvents. Its solubility, its behaviour in thin layer chromatography and its visible adsorption spectrum prove that the pigment is a carotenoid. It is probably formed by oxidation of a carotene. Since its properties do not correspond entirely with those of the known carotenoids, the new cephalopod pigment was called Sepiaxanthine.

Le foie embryonnaire de <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. (mollusque céphalopode): 1. Organogenèse OMA
Lemaire, J.; Richard, A.; Decleir, W..
The rudiments of the "hepatopancreas" appear early, in stage 20, as a pair of diverticula, given off from the midgut. The anterior part which lies against the yolk-sac will become the "liver". The growth of the liver exhibits a close relationship to the development of the inner yolk-sac. An electron microscopic study has been made of the hepatic epithelium at different embryonic stages. From stage 27, the cytologic aspects of the hepatic cell (presence of "balls", cytoplasm with well developed granular endoplasmic reticulum and free ribosoms...) give evidence of secretory activity. These ultrastructural features show that the liver becomes functional and allow us to think that it plays a part in the embryonic metabolism during the last stages of...

La glande nidamentaire accessoire de <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L.: analyses biochimiques des pigments des bactéries symbiotiques OMA
Van den Branden, C.; Richard, A.; Lemaire, J.; Decleir, W..
An electron microscopic study of the accessory nidamental glands from <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. shows a secretory cycle in the epithelial cells and the presence of bacteria in the tubules of the gland. A correlation between sexual maturity, the color of the gland and the total number of symbiotic bacteria can be demonstrated. A biochemical study shows that the correlation of the gland is due to several carotenoid pigments. The most important of these is an orange-red xanthophyll that has been called Sepiaxanthine. It is probably formed in the bacteria as a result of the secretory activity of the epithelial glandular cells. This whole mechanism and the role of the bacteria and pigments need further research.

Carotenoid producing bacteria in the accessory nidamental glands of <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. OMA
Van den Branden, C.; Gillis, M.; Richard, A..
1. The accessory nidamental glands of the cuttlefish, <i>Sepia officinalis</i> L. show an intensive orange-red coloration in mature females. This colour is due to carotenoid pigments which occur in symbiotic bacteria. 2. Six different pigmented strains of bacteria were isolated. 3. The main pigment in five of these strains is beta-carotene. 4. The main pigment in the sixth strain is the keto carotenoid, adonixanthin.
