Novel and underutilized feed resources – potential for use in organic and low input dairy production Organic Eprints
Rinne, Marketta; Dragomir, Catalin; Kuoppala, Kaisa; Marley, Christina; Smith, Jo; Yanez Ruiz, David.
This literature review evaluates the potential of a range of by-products from the agricultural, greenhouse, forestry, food processing and bioenergy sectors and agro-forestry systems as feed components in organic and low input dairy systems. The variability of the raw materials further modified by differing processing methods results in wide range of feed materials available. Innovative use of novel and underutilized feed resources has the potential to improve the efficiency of the “green economy”.

Innovative strategies related to forage production, utilization and feeding for dairy cow productivity Organic Eprints
Zaralis, Konstantinos; Rinne, Marketta; Kurki, Päivi; Dragomir, Catalin; Gerrard, Catherine L; Padel, Susanne.
The SOLID project (Sustainable Organic Low-Input Dairying) carried out research to improve the sustainability of low-input/organic dairy systems in different ways. This deliverable is one of the three that are resulting from the WP1 of the SOLID project and presents and discusses a series of participatory on-farm studies that were conducted to test innovative approaches related to forage production, utilization and feeding in organic and low-input dairying systems. Specifically, the participatory studies focus on a) improvement of soil organic matter through grazing management and establishment of diverse swards b) on-farm strategies for the improvement of forage yield and protein content of the pasture c) utilisation of industrial by-products for dairy...

Adapted vs. conventional cattle genotypes: sustainability for organic and low input dairy production systems Organic Eprints
Zollitsch, Werner; Ferris, Conrad; Sairanen, Auvo; Rinne, Marketta; Steinwidder, Andreas; Horn, Marco; Moorby, Jon; Vestergaard, Mogens.
Dairy cow strains arising from conventional breeding programmes are frequently perceived as unsuitable for organic and low input milk production systems. While farmers have identified a number of breeds and strains as being ‘adapted’ to organic and low input systems, there is often little scientific evidence to indicate that these breeds are more appropriate than conventional genotypes. Thus the purpose of this study is to examine the response of different dairy genotypes (i.e. "conventional" versus "adapted") to an undersupply with nutrients and energy, which is a characteristic of low input systems with limited dietary supplementation and to provide information on the metabolic response of dairy cows to such dietary restrictions.

Välj skördetidpunkten av rödklöver noggrant! Organic Eprints

Integrating willow-based bioenergy and organic dairy production – the role of tree fodder for feed supplementation Organic Eprints
Smith, Jo; Leach, Katharine; Rinne, Marketta; Kuoppala, Kaisa.
Silvopastoral systems that combine livestock and trees offer two main advantages for the animals. First, trees modify microclimatic conditions which can have beneficial effects on pasture growth and animal welfare. Second, trees also provide alternative feed resources during periods of low forage availability. This paper reports on research carried out within the Sustainable Organic and Low Input Dairying (SOLID) project to investigate the multifunctional potential of a novel integrated willow-based bio-energy/organic dairy production system in the UK, especially the role of tree fodder for feed supplementation in organic dairy systems. The nutritional value of two ages (1st and 2nd year re-growth) of short rotation coppiced willow was assessed in two...

EXPERIENCES ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF ON-FARM RESEARCH IN EASTERN FINLAND Organic Eprints
Nykänen, Arja; Kurki, Päivi; Rinne, Marketta.
In Finland, as well as in many other countries, on-farm research is becoming more and more common. The reasons are many-fold. Agricultural research stations are closed down due to economical constraints and researchers want to have ‘real data’ from the farms. Advisors see on-farm research as a new and efficient tool to show farmers good practices in their production. In addition, for farmers it is an attractive way of testing suitable farming practices in the environment of their own farm.

Organic and Low-Input Dairy Farming: Avenues to Enhance Sustainability and Competitiveness in the EU Organic Eprints
Scollan, Nigel; Padel, Susanne; Halberg, Niels; Hermansen, J.E.; Nicholas, Pip; Rinne, Marketta; Zanoli, Raffaele; Zollitsch, Werner; Lauwers, Ludwig.
Whether farming strategies built on continuing input intensification or relying on integrated natural resource management are more sustainable and competitive is at the core of the agricultural development debate. The five-year (2011–16) Sustainable Organic and Low Input Dairying (SOLID) project, funded by the European Commission, involved 25 partners across 10 European countries and was designed to support innovation in European organic and low-input dairy farming. Results show that such systems are very diverse, and need tailor-made farm-specific strategies and related policy measures. This article shows that low-input dairying has country-specific farm characteristics, and is potentially competitive when compared to more intensive dairying systems....

The Solid-DSS – an online application balancing forage supply and demand in organic low-input dairy farming Organic Eprints
Baldinger, Lisa; Vaillant, Jan; Zollitsch, Werner; Rinne, Marketta.
In organic and low-input dairy farming, the forage proportion of the cows´ diets is usually much higher than on conventional farms, therefore the risk of weather induced on-farm feed shortages is of greater importance. As part of the EU research project SOLID (Sustainable Organic and Low Input Dairy Systems; FP7-266367; www.solidairy.eu), a decision support system is currently being developed which will evaluate dairy farm management with regard to the risk of feed shortages. Based on input from the user, climate data from the last 50 years and a soil model, feed supply will be simulated by a crop model, and feed demand will be simulated by a herd model. These data will then be connected in a diet model, which designs diets for all groups of cows using a...

Novel feeds for organic dairy chains Organic Eprints
Rinne, Marketta; Dragomir, Catalin; Kuoppala, Kaisa; Smith, Jo; Yanez Ruiz, David.
The objective of the current work was to assess various novel and underutilized feeds and thus increase the awareness of various novel feeding solutions to support organic and low-input dairy production. A set of various feeds representing high protein feeds, by-products from distilling, wineries, fruit and vegetable production, whole crop cereals, agroforestry and wood derived materials were collected from Spain, Romania, UK and Finland and analysed for chemical composition and digestibility. The results can be used to aid in exploiting the potential of different feed resources and in ration formulation, and to demonstrate potential to widen the basis of feed supply on organic and low-input dairy farms. The use of various by-products as animal feeds...
