New SERS Substrates For Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Detection: Towards Quantitative SERS Sensors For Environmental Analysis ArchiMer
Peron, Olivier; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Compere, Chantal; Toury, T.; De La Chapelle, M. Lamy.
In the investigation of chemical pollutions, such as PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) at low concentration in aqueous medium, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) stands for an alternative to the inherent low cross-section of normal Raman scattering. Indeed, SERS is a very sensitive spectroscopic technique due to the excitation of the surface plasmon modes of the nanostructured metallic film.

Betelu, S; Tijunelyte, I; Boubekeur Lecaque, L; Ignatiadis, I; Schnepf, Ac; Guenin, E; Bouchemal, N; Felidj, N; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Lamy De La Chapelle, M.
The objective of the present work is to use Raman spectroscopy for characterizing, the fate of phenyl-derivatives, from phenyl-amines to aryl-diazonium derivatives (ADD). Four ADD were investigated: (i) benzene diazoniumtetrafluoroborate (DS), (ii) 4-decyl benzene diazoniumtetrafluoroborate (DS-C10H21), (iii) 4-carboxybenzene diazoniumtetrafluoroborate (DS-COOH) and (iv) 4-(aminoethyl) benzene diazoniumtetrafluoroborate (DS-(CH2)2NH2). Raman investigation of the above ADD confirmed the existence of an N≡N bond stretching in the range of 2285-2305 cm-1. Moreover, the strong band related to CH in plane-bending and C-N-stretching modes in the 1073-1080 cm-1 range, is a signature of phenyl derivatives stemming from ADD. Furthermore, we analyzed and discuss the...

Influence of environmental and anthropogenic factors on the composition, concentration and spatial distribution of microplastics: A case study of the Bay of Brest (Brittany, France) ArchiMer
Frere, L.; Paul-pont, I.; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Petton, Sebastien; Jaffre, J; Bihannic, Isabelle; Soudant, P.; Lambert, C.; Huvet, Arnaud.
The concentration and spatial distribution of microplastics in the Bay of Brest (Brittany, France) was investigated in two surveys. Surface water and sediment were sampled at nine locations in areas characterized by contrasting anthropic pressures, riverine influences or water mixing. Microplastics were categorized by their polymer type and size class. Microplastic contamination in surface water and sediment was dominated by polyethylene fragments (PE, 53–67%) followed by polypropylene (PP, 16–30%) and polystyrene (PS, 16–17%) microparticles. The presence of buoyant microplastics (PE, PP and PS) in sediment suggests the existence of physical and/or biological processes leading to vertical transfer of lightweight microplastics in the bay. In sediment (upper...

Development of an evanescent optical integrated sensor in the mid-infrared for detection of pollution in groundwater or seawater ArchiMer
Baudet, Emeline; Gutierrez-arroyo, A.; Baillieul, Marion; Charrier, J.; Němec, P.; Bodiou, L.; Lemaitre, J.; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Michel, K.; Bureau, B.; Adam, J. L.; Nazabal, V..
The detection of molecules dissolved in liquid medium can be envisaged by means of an optical integrated sensor operating in middle infrared range. The intended sensor is composed of a cladding and a guiding selenide sputtered layers transparent in middle infrared. Hence, Ge-Sb-Se thin films were selected in view of tailored refractive index contrast, successfully deposited by radio frequency magnetron sputtering and characterized. To maximize the evanescent field at a wavelength of 7.7 µm, a suitable selenide waveguide allowing measuring the optical transmitted power was designed by performing computer simulations based on the effective index method enabling single-mode propagation for a waveguide width between 8 and 12 µm. Selenide sputtered films were...

Detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds in artificial sea-water using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) ArchiMer
Peron, Olivier; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Lehaitre, Michel; Crassous, Philippe; Compere, Chantal.
This paper reports an accurate synthesis of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates, based on gold colloidal monolayer, suitable for in situ environmental analysis. Quartz substrates were functionalized by silanization with (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPMS) or (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and they subsequently reacted with colloidal suspension of gold metal nanoparticles: respectively, the functional groups SH and NH2 bound gold nanoparticles. Gold nanoparticles were prepared by the chemical reduction of HAuCl4 using sodium tricitrate and immobilized onto silanized quartz substrates. Active substrate surface morphology was characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements and gold nanoparticles...

Surface enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy using gold nanoparticles on As2S3 glass ArchiMer
Verger, F.; Pain, T.; Nazabal, V.; Boussard-pledel, C.; Bureau, Bruno; Colas, Florent; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Boukerma, Kada; Compere, Chantal; Guilloux-viry, M.; Deputier, S.; Perrin, A.; Guin, J. P..
The development of infrared sensing platform requires adapted materials. In this work, we used sputtered gold nanoparticles on a chalcogenide glass to demonstrate that these infrared materials can be used as substrate for surface enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy. The sputtering parameters were optimized to get the highest possible enhancement. To assess it, a self-assembled monolayer of 4-nitrothiophenol was used. These preliminary results are promising and pave the way for various configurations of waveguide for integrated optical components. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Colas, Florent; Crassous, Marie-pierre; Laurent, Sebastien; Litaker, Richard W.; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Le Gall, Erwan; Lunven, Michel; Delauney, Laurent; Compère, Chantal.
Over the past decade Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) techniques have been applied to the measurement of numerous analytes. In this article, an SPR biosensor system deployed from an oceanographic vessel was used to measure dissolved domoic acid (DA), a common and harmful phycotoxin produced by certain microalgae species belonging to the genus Pseudo-nitzschia. During the biosensor deployment, concentrations of Pseudo-nitzschia cells were very low over the study area and measured DA concentrations were below detection. However, the in situ operational detection limit of the system was established using calibrated seawater solutions spiked with DA. The system could detect the toxin at concentrations as low as 0.1 ng mL−1 and presented a linear dynamic range...

Tijunelyte, Inga; Dupont, Nathalie; Milosevic, Irena; Barbey, Carole; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Lidgi-guigui, Nathalie; Guenin, Erwann; De La Chapelle, Marc Lamy.
Among various cavitand molecules, cyclodextrins are extensively studied due to their ability to form host-guest complexes with small hydrophobic molecules. Aiming to explore cyclodextrin implementation on the scopes related to the environmental pollution monitoring or remediation, extensive studies for understanding the cyclodextrin-based host-guest complex formation with selected targeted substances are conducted. In this context, two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, naphthalene and fluoranthene as well as toluene as a member of volatile organic compounds, were studied regarding their ability to encapsulate into cyclodextrin cavities. Synthesised complexes were examined by thermogravimetric analysis combined with Raman spectroscopy. The obtained results...

Influence of adhesive bond line thickness on joint strength ArchiMer
Davies, Peter; Sohier, L.; Cognard, J. -y.; Bourmaud, A.; Choqueuse, Dominique; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Creac'Hcadec, R..
While the geometry of aerospace assemblies is carefully controlled, for many industrial applications such as marine structures bond line thickness can vary significantly. In this study epoxy adhesive joints of different thicknesses between aluminium substrates have been characterized using physico-chemical analyses (differential scanning calorimetry, DSC; dynamic mechanical analysis, DMA; spectroscopy), nano-indentation and mechanical testing. Thermal analyses indicated no influence of thickness on structure. Nano-indentation revealed no evidence of an interphase at the metal/epoxy interface, nor any change in modulus for different thicknesses, though Raman spectroscopy suggested there may be slight variations in composition close to the substrates....

Pollution of the oceans by microplastics (<5 mm) represents a major environmental problem. To date, a limited number of studies have investigated the level of contamination of marine organisms collected in situ. For extraction and characterization of microplastics in biological samples, the crucial step is the identification of solvent(s) or chemical(s) that efficiently dissolve organic matter without degrading plastic polymers for their identification in a time and cost effective way. Most published papers, as well as OSPAR recommendations for the development of a common monitoring protocol for plastic particles in fish and shellfish at the European level, use protocols containing nitric acid to digest the biological tissues, despite reports of...

Experimental design approach for deposition optimization of RF sputtered chalcogenide thin films devoted to environmental optical sensors ArchiMer
Baudet, Emeline; Sergent, M.; Nemec, P.; Cardinaud, C.; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Michel, K.; Jouany, L.; Bureau, B.; Nazabal, V..
The development of the optical bio-chemical sensing technology is an extremely important scientific and technological issue for diagnosis and monitoring of diseases, control of industrial processes, environmental detection of air and water pollutants. Owing to their distinctive features, chalcogenide amorphous thin films represent a keystone in the manufacture of middle infrared integrated optical devices for a sensitive detection of biological or environmental variations. Since the chalcogenide thin films characteristics, i. e. stoichiometric conformity, structure, roughness or optical properties can be affected by the growth process, the choice and control of the deposition method is crucial. An approach based on the experimental design is undoubtedly a...

Macroplastic and microplastic contamination assessment of a tropical river (Saigon River, Vietnam) transversed by a developing megacity ArchiMer
Lahens, Lisa; Strady, Emilie; Kieu-le, Thuy-chung; Dris, Rachid; Boukerma, Kada; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Gasperi, Johnny; Tassin, Bruno.
Both macroplastic and microplastic contamination levels were assessed for the first time in a tropical river estuary system, i.e. the Saigon River, that traverses a developing South East Asian megacity, i.e. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The analysis of floating debris collected daily on the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal by the municipal waste management service shows that the plastic mass percentage represents 11-43%, and the land-based plastic debris entering the river was estimated from 0.96 to 19.91 g inhabitant-1 d-1, namely 350 to 7270 g inhabitant-1 yr-1. Microplastics were assessed in the Saigon River and in four urban canals by sampling bulk water for anthropogenic fiber analysis and 300 μm mesh size plankton net exposition for fragment analysis. Fibers...

Organometallic nanoprobe to enhance optical response on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon benzo[a]pyrene immunoassay using SERS technology ArchiMer
Dribek, Mohamed; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Colas, Florent; Crassous, Marie-pierre; Thioune, Nene; David, Catalina; De La Chapelle, Marc; Compere, Chantal.
We demonstrated the use of a new organometallic nanoprobe for competitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) immunoassay devoted to the detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) such as benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in seawater. The nanoprobes are gold nanoparticles (GNPs) labeled by a Raman reporter, the 5,5'-dithiobis(succinimidyl-2-nitrobenzoate) (DSNB) and functionalized with monoclonal antibodies anti-BaP. The antibodies are bound with a high specificity to the analyte while the GNPs enhanced the Raman scattering of the DSNB. This type of immunoassay involved the grafting of BaP onto a sensing surface. Thus, NH2-terminated self-assembled monolayer is formed on the surface of gold substrate using cysteamine. Amines finally reacted with...

Oceans environmental monitoring and seafloor exploitation need in situ sensors and optical devices (cameras, lights) in various locations and on various carriers in order to initiate and to calibrate environmental models or to operate underwater industrial process supervision. For more than 10 years Ifremer deploys in situ monitoring systems for various seawater parameters and in situ observation systems based on lights and HD Cameras. To be economically operational, these systems must be equipped with a biofouling protection dedicated to the sensors and optical devices used in situ. Indeed, biofouling, in less than 15 days [1] will modify the transducing interfaces of the sensors and causes unacceptable bias on the measurements provided by the in situ...

In this article, we propose a new strategy to build a sensor for easy handling and rapid analysis on-site. Our sensor is based on the combination of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). SERS provides a strong sensitivity for the detection of trace molecules while MIPs offer a highly selective and specific recognition platform. The research presented here focuses on the detection of the interaction between a robust ultra-thin layer of MIPs and of paracetamol, the targeted molecule. This drug is an environmental emerging pollutant, i.e., a molecule whose presence and significance have not yet been elucidated, which gives rise to health and environmental concerns. The results are a combined analysis of the SERS...

The primary objective of this study is the development of transparent thin film materials in the IR enabling strong infrared absorption of organic compounds in the vicinity of metal nanoparticles by the surface plasmon effect. For developing these optical micro-sensors, hetero-structures combining gold nanoparticles and chalcogenide planar waveguides are fabricated and adequately characterized. Single As2S3 and Ge25Sb10Se65 amorphous chalcogenide thin films are prepared by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. For the fabrication of gold nanoparticles on a chalcogenide planar waveguide, direct current sputtering is employed. Monoaromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) monitoring is of environmental interest since these chemical pollutants are omnipresent. While waiting for robust sensors able to detect hydrocarbons at very low levels, the present study shows how each compound from pure BTEX mixtures can be identified fast and quantified thanks to Raman spectrometry and data processing based on the SIMPLISMA algorithm. A preprocessing module has been created to remove background contributions and a postprocessing program has been added to achieve matching and calibration. A wide range of BTEX concentrations and relative proportions has been investigated in order to determine the limitations of the processing. Output results achieved an accuracy of up to 95%. Organometallic nanoprobe to enhance optical response on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) immunoassay using SERS technology ArchiMer
Dribek, Mohamed; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Colas, Florent; Crassous, Marie-pierre; Compere, Chantal.
We demonstrate the possible use of organometallic nanoprobe on competitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering immunoassay for policyclic aromatic hydrocarbon detection in sea water. This type of SERS immunoassay is based on to capture Raman reporter-labeled immuno-Au onto the immobilized layer of antigens (benzo[a]pyrene) on the gold substrate after incubation of these nanoprobes with PAHs including in the sample. To realize nanoprobes, first we have prepared gold nanoparticles (GNPs) according to Frens’ method. Then, we have labeled GNPs by the Raman reporter of 5,5’-Dithiobis(succinimidyl-2-nitrobenzoate) (DSNB). Thereafter, Benzo[a]pyrene antibody was attached to the DSNB labeled GNPs. Before use in SERS detection, their activity was controlled by...
