Última EMPLOYMENT CRISIS IN AGRICULTURE AND THE SPATIAL INEQUALITIES IN HUNGARY AgEcon Ritter, Krisztian. Main objective of the paper is to discover Hungary’s rural areas suffering from agricultural employment crisis and to compare them to the spatial inequalities, examining the development possibilities and the adaptability to new economic and social processes. The actuality of this objective has been given by the recent processes in the global, European and Hungarian economy, the growing importance of local development and endogenous resources, the decreasing role of agriculture in total employment, and the general problems of rural areas. Írásunk felvázolja az alulról kezdeményezett helyi vidékfejlesztési programok által nyújtott lehetőségeket azokban a hátrányos helyzetű kistérségekben, amelyek a legtöbbet szenvedtek a mezőgazdasági foglalkoztatás csökkenése miatt. Kutatásunk eredményei arra engednek következtetni, hogy az ÚMVP LEADER program és az ÚMVP III. tengely LEADER elveken alapuló négy intézkedése már eddig is hozzájárult a helyi gazdasági és társadalmi problémák mérsékléséhez a hét vizsgált HACS területén, de szerintünk további változtatások szükségesek a helyi vidékfejlesztési stratégiákban annak érdekében, hogy valóban jelentős gazdasági, társadalmi fejlődés következzen be. There is no universally accepted definition of the category of "rural area" in Hungary and this issue is the subject of controversy. The EU or OECD standards cannot be fully applied due to unique national characteristics. As a) the role of agriculture in the national economy has drastically decreased in the last 15 years in Hungary - due to the political transition and globalisation, and as b) this decreasing importance causes heavy and pressing problems, especially in agricultural and ex-agricultural areas and regions, job loss is a characteristic sign of the underprivileged areas, and that affects mainly the villages and rural people who have lost their jobs in the agricultural sector. As a main reason, in Hungary - partly due to the political and economical transition - the role of agriculture in employment has been notably decreased. In Hungary the changing role of agriculture, the rural unemployment and the territorial distribution of unemployment were analyzed numbers of times in the last decades, while there were no researches in agricultural unemployment and it’s territorial characteristics.
