The present work aimed to analyze the economical efficiency and the risk associated with three different cattle production systems (Cow-calf, Rearing and Finishing) in the Alto Pantanal (MS) Area. For that, the economical efficiency of each system was assessed and then the Monte Carlo risk simulation method was performed. The deterministic analysis showed that the Rearing system was the most profitable while the Finishing system presented the worst profit result. The Cow-calf system obtained an intermediate profit result. The risk economical analysis revealed the Cow-calf system as the lower risky system. This research analyzed the integrated and independent systems of pork production in Brazil, using multiple case studies, which focused on confined and complete-cycle producing units of swines, in the high and low profits periods of the activity. The study focused on the pork production of the State of Santa Catarina (SC), Brazilian’s greatest producer of swines, and presenting the predominance of integrated production, and on the Vale do Piranga (MG) region, one of the main Brazilian regions of the independent production system. This study aimed to identify the determinants of the Pará de Minas pork meat chain competitiviness as well as suggest actions to improve it. The chain analysis was based on the Silva e Batalha (1999) methodology, and it was extended by the development of a S.W.O.T. analysis. The main chain strengths were related to the presence of cooperatives and a well developed communication infrastructure. However, its main weaknesses were related to the low level of farmer’s collective production sell, and lack of cooperative culture among farmers.
