Detection of introduced sessile species on the near shore continental shelf in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bumbeer,Janaína de Araújo; Rocha,Rosana Moreira da.
Invasion by marine species, often considered a grave threat to marine ecosystems, occurs throughout the world as a consequence of many anthropogenic activities. In coastal Paraná, many factors including shipping, aquaculture and the use of artificial substrates provide suitable environments for the establishment and rapid spread of introduced marine species. To better understand this process, the encrusting community was studied on polyethylene plates (n = 120, 10 x 10 cm) that were placed seasonally at fixed locations on the inner continental shelf to detect non-native species. Of the 62 taxa found, 40 were identified to species, 14 of which were native, 9 introduced and 17 cryptogenic. We found a new introduction while most introduced species were...

Invading the natural marine substrates: a case study with invertebrates in South Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bumbeer,Janaína; Rocha,Rosana Moreira da.
ABSTRACT The number of biological invasions has grown dramatically in recent decades, as well as the world's human population and coastal development. Anthropogenic habitats, such as pier pilings and break waters, have been constantly added to marine environment, usually concentrated in estuarine areas. These habitats are focal points for marine invasions, but relatively little is known about the spread of non-indigenous species (NIS) to nearby natural habitats. This study aimed to determine the extent to which NIS have spread to natural substrates both inside estuarine areas and in the adjacent open sea. We conducted a field survey and a literature review, which have been critically discussed and validated. The updated NIS list of benthic invertebrates...

Trididemnum maragogi sp. novo (Ascidiacea, Didemnidae) trom Alagoas, Northeastern Brazil Zoologia
Rocha,Rosana Moreira da.
The new species of didemnid ascidian, Trididemnum maragogi sp. nov., is described from the Northeastern Brazilian coast. Many small colonies aggregate on calcareous algae. They are brown and more or less covered by spicules, depending on exposure to the sun, which suggests the presence of symbiotic algae. This species is characterized by a non pigmented zooid with a very long oral siphon bordered by six finger-like lobes, a branchial sac with anterior and posterior non perforated areas, a short muscular process on the esophageal peduncle and a testis with one large follicle partially surrounded by 6-7 coils of the sperm duct.

Ascidians at Currais islands, Paraná, Brazil: taxonomy and distribution Biota Neotropica
Rocha,Rosana Moreira da; Faria,Suzana Barros de.
The Currais Islands is a group of a few small rocky islands in the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil, which provides an interesting location for the study of ascidians. Subtidal diversity is very high and the islands have recently been proposed as a Conservation Unit. A field study was established on the largest island to understand ascidian distributions on spatial and temporal scales. Transects, sampled three times during 2002 and 2003, were established on northern and southern locations of the island as well as at three depths. Twenty species were recorded; the most common were Didemnum rodriguesi, Didemnum speciosum and Didemnum granulatum. Three species are possibly new and will be described elsewhere. An additional nine are new records for the...

Biodiversity of benthic macroinvertebrates on hard substrates in the Currais Marine Protected Area, in southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Bumbeer,Janaína; Cattani,André Pereira; Chierigatti,Nícolas Binneck; Rocha,Rosana Moreira da.
Abstract This study describes the biodiversity of benthic invertebrates on hard substrates in the Currais Marine Protected Area (Currais MPA), in the state of Paraná. The benthic community was sampled during 2012 to 2015, in winter and summer, at two islands and four groups of artificial reefs (ARs). Samples were collected along shallow (2-4 m) and deep (6-8 m) transects at the islands and ~18 m transects at the ARs. We also searched the literature to review all published records of benthic invertebrates on hard substrates in the Currais MPA. We recorded 176 taxa in the phyla Annelida (class Polychaeta), Arthropoda (class Maxillopoda, order Sessilia), Bryozoa, Cnidaria, Chordata (class Ascidiacea), Echinodermata, Mollusca and Porifera, in 13 classes, 40...

No entanto, ainda...

Epibiosis Reduction on Productivity in a Mussel Culture of Perna perna (Linné, 1758) BABT
Metri,Rafael; Rocha,Rosana Moreira da; Marenzi,Adriano.
Cultivated mussels (Perna perna) were studied to test for the effects of cleaning on their growth. These effects were examined by experimentally cleaning mussels and by changing mussel density. Treatment was performed twice, at two and four months after immerging the ropes. Two months after the first treatment and three months after the second treatment, mussels were harvested and measured (weight, length, width and thickness). Analysis of variance showed that none of the treatments resulted in increased growth of the mussels, nor did increased density result in decreased growth when compared with the control. It was concluded that it was not necessary to clean the shells to increase harvest.

Introduced and cryptogenic species and their management in Paranaguá Bay, Brazil BABT
Neves,Carolina Somaio; Rocha,Rosana Moreira da.
The aim of this work was to identify the introduced and cryptogenic species in encrusting and associated communities of hard substrates in Paranaguá Bay, Brazil, and to attempt to determine which of these species could negatively affect the local community to suggest management strategies for these species. At least four introduced species were found - a large number in comparison with other port surveys. These were the hydrozoan Garveia franciscana Torrey, 1902, the polychaete Polydora cornuta Bosc, 1902, the barnacles Amphibalanus reticulatus (Utinoni, 1967) and Striatobalanus amaryllis Darwin, 1854, all with potentially harmful impacts. Of the 33 cryptogenic species, four were also listed in the literature as causing negative effects. We propose the...
