Impact of animal health and welfare planning on medicine use, herd health and production in European organic dairy farms Organic Eprints

A reduction of medicine use (udder treatments, metabolic treatments and total number of treatments) in organic dairy herds was achieved within a time period of one year under different conditions across seven European countries. At the same time an improvement of udder health (SCS) and a stable situation in other health areas (metabolic disorders, fertility) was found, however regardless of the focus area in the AHWP. The AHWP process which was implemented on the farms may therefore be regarded a feasible approach to minimise medicine use without impairment of health, longevity and productivity under most European organic dairy farming conditions. Using legume-based mixtures to enhance the nitrogen use efficiency and economic viability of cropping systems. Organic Eprints

There is a pressing need to develop arable cropping systems that are both more efficient in their use of nitrogen (N) and more resilient to an increasingly variable and unpredictable climate. One potential solution is to use species-rich mixtures of grasses and legumes in the fertilitybuilding phase of a ley/arable crop rotation. These mixtures may reduce N losses and increase productivity of the following crop. They may also have other important benefits such as increased in-field biodiversity. In this project, legume and grass species with a range of tolerances to different environmental conditions, and with differing growth characteristics, are being grown individually and as a mixture across the UK, and their performance assessed.

As costs for mineral fertilisers rise, legume-based leys are recognised as a potential alternative nitrogen source for crops. Here we demonstrate that including species-rich legume-based leys in rotations helps to maximise synergies between agricultural productivity and other ecosystem services. By using functionally diverse plant species mixtures, these services can be optimised and fine-tuned to regional and farm-specific needs. Replicated field experiments were conducted over three years at multiple locations, testing the performance of 12 legume species and 4 grass species sown in monocultures, as well as in a mixture of 10 of the legumes and all 4 grasses (called the All Species Mix, ASM). Making the most of soil nitrogen Organic Eprints

Optimising the amount of nitrogen captured by fertility building crops is essential for successful organic farming. This study used a combination of literature review, empirical measurements, model development and farmer participation to produce improved guidelines on making the most of soil nitrogen for organic farmers and growers. The main field experiment examined the impact of cutting and mulching on the build up of soil nitrogen. Recommendations to organic farmers from this part of the work, are that cutting and removing herbage during the fertility building phase promotes the highest amount of nitrogen fixation. However the highest soil residues occurred when clover was mulched in situ. Application of organic manures to legumes should also be avoided...

Sustainability assessment for organic farming - integrating financial, environmental, social and animal welfare benchmarking Organic Eprints

Real improvement in agricultural sustainability requires that its assessment should involve more than monitoring changes for research and policy evaluation purposes. Producers need practical information and guidance on how to change their systems to affect non-fi nancial and fi nancial outcomes. Recent organic farming benchmarking projects have shown how practical tools can be developed with the participation of stakeholders: these include farm income and fi nancial benchmarking projects at University of Wales, Aberystwyth; animal welfare assessments at Duchy College; socio-economic foot-printing at the University of Exeter; and fi rst attempts to combine the different elements including environmental aspects by Mark Measures Associates and Elm Farm...
