Using local raw material for broiler feed in organic farming Organic Eprints
Roinsard, Antoine; Bordeaux, Célia; Lubac, Stanislas; Brachet, Mathilde; German, Karine; Juin, Hervé.
The article summarises the results of French and European research projects. It presents the vegetable protein market for animal feed, the nutritional values of various high-protein raw materials and the results of testing formulation strategies (diversification of raw materials and foraging). New raw materials are interesting, but not available and/or expensive. The tests reveal additional costs related to feed price and increased consumption indices. Formulation strategies with lower levels of protein in the finishing period make it possible to limit these obstacles. This article is mainly interesting for advisors. It is specific to organic farming, but not limited to a geographical area.

100 % organic feeding for monogastrics is a challenge for poultry value chain and feed industry. 100 % organic diets without including conventional protein concentrate is a challenge : this might increase the importation of organic proteins (soya) and involve risk on technical and economical performances. This article is a synthesis of different research projects lead in France and in Europe. Nutritional value of organic raw material is highly variable, especially oleaginous meal (whatever the process). Increasing knowledge about nutritional value of organic raw material is needed to support 100 % organic feeding. Even if different organic raw material could be used in diets, this material is not sufficiently available with regard to their quantity...

Rotating pasture for pregnant sows (OK-Net Ecofeed Practice Abstract) Organic Eprints
Roinsard, Antoine.
With this practice, feed and production costs can be reduced by 16 % due to lower quantities of concentrate feed and lower costs of "pasture feed" per ton. Practical recommendations • Allow time for the grass ley to establish before sows start grazing. • Enrich the ley with legumes to provide good nutritional value and palatability for sows. • Harvest/remove less palatable plants that are not eaten by sows. • To prevent rooting behaviour remove sows when the grass is still high (> 8 cm). • Encourage the creation of functional areas (lying area, feeding area) and encourage sows to learn to graze on the paddock. • Provide individual feeding distribution systems to avoid aggression. • Provide excess grass as silage during periods with no grass...

Nutritional value of organic raw material for poultry Organic Eprints
Juin, Hervé; Feuillet, Dalila; Roinsard, Antoine.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the nutritive interest of different organic and local raw material for organic broiler nutrition. Chemical analysis and balance study on 35 days old broilers (slow growth strain) were conducted to esti mate metablizable energy and protein digestibilty of 11 raw materials. There was a positive correlation between fat content and metabolizable energy. The results indicated that forages and larva of insects could contribute to protein feeding in organic broilers. Technolgy could represent an interesting wazy to increase nutritional value of local seeds (such as linseed, sunflower). There is need to complementary study like amino acid profile or incorporation in the diet during the life of animal.

Lubac, Sophie; Roinsard, Antoine; Dartois, Sylvie; Pourteau, Marion; Beral, Camille; Germain, Karine; Bourgade, Emilie; Guillet, Philippe.

Foraging sows on high-protein grassland Organic Eprints
Maupertius, Florence; Pierre, Patrice; Roinsard, Antoine.
The video "Foraging of sows on high-protein grassland" presents the results of a trial conducted on the Trinottières pig experimental farm on 6000 m² of grassland, containing grasses and fodder legumes. The aim is to test rotational grazing on pregnant sows, whose concentrated feed is reduced in quantity and protein, and to observe the feeding behaviour of sows, the circulation of animals, and the consumption of feedstuff. The trial was seemed to support this method. However, it suggests that a full ration should be maintained at the end of the pregnancy. This tool is interesting for both farmers and advisors, and can also be used in conventional outdoor breeding. It can be used in any geographical area where animals have access to the outdoors.

Jurjanz, Stefan; Roinsard, Antoine.
