From selection to cultivation with the support of all stakeholders: first registration in France of two bread wheat varieties after VCU in organic farming system Organic Eprints
Rolland, Bernard; Fontaine, Laurence; Maillard, Aurélie; Oury, François-Xavier.
As bread wheat is the most important cash crops for French organic farmers, the question of the kind of varieties farmers should be using is therefore very important. Most of varieties available were bred for intensive “conventional” farming systems (with high inputs of mineral fertilizers and pesticides), also screening current varieties for organic conditions becomes a necessity to identifiy suitable varieties for organic farming conditions in a short term experiment. After 20 years of selection and screening combined in two different crop management systems, low inputs and organic, two lines, Hendrix and Skerzzo, have been registered in the official catalogue with the special mention « organic farming ». For the second year of seed production, 150...

What breeding strategy(ies) should be carry up for organic winter wheat? Results and prospects from a long-term comparison with low input variety trials Organic Eprints
Le Campion, A.; Oury, F. X.; Morlais, J.Y.; Walczak, P.; Gardet, O.; Gilles, S.; Pichard, A.; Rolland, Bernard.
Breeding varieties adapted to various organic farming conditions is one solution, among others, to increase yields and improve organic winter bread wheat quality. From 2004 to 2011, INRA winter wheat breeders have conducted variety trials in three contrasting agro-climatic regions across north-west France to test the relative response of 25 to 30 diversified genotypes when cultivated in low input (FI) and organic (AB) conditions. The comparison of 17 paired management trials showed the relevance of low input conditions to identify genotypes adapted to organic farming conditions for yield and protein content. Such a selection environment is useful also to screen “GPD+” (positive Grain Protein Deviation) genotypes with better nutrient use efficiency. In...

Contribution to organic breeding programmes of wheat variety testing in organic farming in France Organic Eprints
Fontaine, Laurence; Rolland, Bernard; Bernicot, Marie-Hélène.
Bread winter wheat is one of the most important cash crops for French organic farmers. Nevertheless, most of varieties available on the market were bred for conventional farming systems (with high inputs of mineral fertilizers and chemicals for crop defense). In order to obtain correct levels of yield and quality, it is important i) to screen current varieties to find the best suited for organic conditions, and ii) to rapidly obtain suitable varieties that are specifically bred for organic farming conditions. Bread wheat variety trials under organic conditions have been coordinated since the year 2001, to centralize and evaluate results at national level. The ringtest not only aims to compare varieties, but also to support organic breeding, as it provides...
