Energy performance of sugarcane potential ethanol production under different management systems CIGR Journal
Wei, Marcelo Chan Fu; Romanelli, Thiago Libório; Molin, José Paulo.
Crop rotation with leguminous species in sugarcane cultivation is increasing in the southeastern regions of Brazil. Studies on sugarcane ethanol production rely basically at the economic and sustainable points of view overlooking the energy analysis. This study aimed to evaluate the sugarcane ethanol yield under no-tillage and conventional systems with different green manure treatments using a published dataset at the energy point of view. Analysis of energy efficiency was carried out using the indicators: energy balance (EB), energy return over investment (EROI) and Energy Intensity (EI). Energy balance ranged from 129.78 GJ ha-1 to 216.92 GJ ha-1, with no-tillage system presenting the highest values of EB. EROI presented the highest values (334.19,...

Energy, water and material footprints of agricultural machinery industry CIGR Journal
Mantoam, Edemilson J; Mekonnen, Mesfin M; Romanelli, Thiago Libório.
The intensification of agricultural production systems demand power, supplied by agricultural machinery, besides more agricultural inputs such as fertilizer, pesticides and seeds. Agricultural mechanization provided increase in the global production of food, fiber and bioenergy; and it brought economic benefits to producers, but causing larger energy consumption. Energy embodiment in agricultural machinery has been approached, but data usually are from car industry. This study aimed to determine the energy demand in a plant that assembles five types of agricultural machinery from a multinational manufacturer located in Piracicaba municipality in Sao Paulo state, Brazil. That plant assembles two types of sugarcane harvester, coffee harvesters, sprayers and...

Energy analysis of Jatropha curcas under irrigation and rainfed at the Southeast Brazilian humid subtropical CIGR Journal
Santos, Otávio Neto Almeida; Folegatti, Marcos Vinícius; Lena, Bruno Patias; Diotto, Adriano Valentim; Francisco, João Paulo; Romanelli, Thiago Libório.
Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) is an oil seed species, adaptive to different climate and soil conditions. It is known due to its high-oil-content seed, being an option for biodiesel production and presenting competitive yields under irrigated condition. This study was developed in an experimental area located in a humid subtropical region of Brazil and the objective was to evaluate Jatropha’s energy balance under irrigation and rainfed condition during the first four years of its cycle. First, the material flows were determined, which supported the calculation of, energy input and output flows were obtained. These were used to determine the energy indices: energy balance (EB), and energy return on investment (EROI) for both conditions. Fertilizers had the...
