Planning the Sustainable Agro-fuel Supply Chain AgEcon
Rosa, Franco.
The agricultural sector is receiving a great deal of attention for topics of general interest as the security, multifunctional activities, alternative uses of crops in food/feed/fuel, reduction in GHG (Green House Gas) emission, LCA (Life Cycle Assessment). The EU policies are directed to implement sustainable local agro-food systems, and the AFSC (agro-fuel supply chain) represent the central issue in planning agricultural commodities to be used for fuel production performed in a space-time dimension. In this paper it is presented a methodology of regional planning the AFSC supported by empirical evidences in the region FVG (Friuli Venezia Giulia). The reference crop is the Mais largely cultivated in this region and now used to satisfy food-feedstock-fuel...

IFECO – Modelling the Agro-Fuel Chain for Energy Cogeneration AgEcon
Rosa, Franco.
Policy makers are searching for viable strategies to produce alternative energies; the agricultural sector can become an important supplier of renewable energy. The paper will develop the IFECO (integrated farm energy cogeneration) approach, a conceptual model of farm though as it were an "island economy"a a net energy exporter as the energy output exceeds the direct energy (cultivation, cropping, plant protection, transport, harvesting, storage) and indirect energy (fertilizer, pesticide, machinery, plantationforce, others) used in sunflower cultivation. IFECO is based on the cogeneration that is the production of different energies from a single agricultural commodity to achieve the three targets that make this project sustainable: i) economic...

Influence of Product Perception and Quality Label Valuation on Consumer Decision. The Case of Beef in Italy and Spain AgEcon
Barrena Figueroa, Ramo; Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes; Rosa, Franco.
The consumer perception of the relation between food and health is increased his importance. This situation generates business opportunities, when his effect is positive (for example "functional food"), or limitations or reductions in the markets (for example "food with risk perception"). This paper trait to present the relation between consumer perception of 1) intrinsic and extrinsic product attributes and 2) the influenced aspects on the label valuation on the product confidence and consumption reduction, in one market with risk perception (beef). The data has been obtained in two European Regions: Friuli-Venezia-Giulia in Italy and Navarra in Spain, differentiated in commercial aspects related fundamentally with the product differentiation. The...

Strategies for the Agro-food Sector AgEcon

The agro-food sector is receiving a great deal of attention for topics of general interest as the food quality, security and safety, alternative uses of crops in food/feed/fuel, growing concern for GHG (Green House Gas) emission, LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), energy consumption. Structuring Consumer Preferences with the SEM Method AgEcon
Rosa, Franco.
Structuring preferences has been developed with econometric models using functional flexible parametric form and the exploring the perceptions about expressed and latent needs using different multivariate approaches. Purpose of this research is to explore the demand for a new drink using the mean-end chain (MEC) theory and multivariate SEM procedure. The first part is dedicated to description of specialty foods for their capacity to create new niche markets. The MEC theory is introduced to explain the relations between attributes and consumers' perceptions of secondary needs revealed as benefit and values. The second part is dedicated to the empirical investigation of demand of a drink obtained from the "Olivello spinoso" a spontaneous plant. Empirical...

Planning of the Agrifood supply chain: a case study for the FVG region AgEcon
Rosa, Franco; Sossai, E.; Vasciaveo, Michela.
The aim of this paper is to discuss the planning of regional Agri-food supply chain using an integrated database territorial information. The objective is to optimize the chain performance using alternative solutions. Evidences are obtained with a case study performed in FVG region applied to maize-crop. Firstly it is explored the chain network composed by farms, collection points and processing plants; then territorial, agronomic and climate information are integrated to simulate realistic production forecast model applied to maize crop. Finally a program from graph analysis is used to allocate the production through the chain. The economic performance is evaluated using the net revenues varying with the intensification of maize production and adoption of...

Trust in Label Information to Recuperate Consumer's Confidence for Meat: A Compared Analysis among Canada, Italy, and Spain AgEcon
Rosa, Franco; Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes; Barrena Figueroa, Ramo.
The analysis consisted in a field experiment performed by testing the opinions of different consumers groups: two of them located in the European Regions respectively: Friuli-Venezia-Giulia in Italy and Navarra in Spain; a third one located in the Ontario region, Canada. The data were processed by using a multivariate structural equation in the multi-group version. The enquiry was performed in 2003, just after the news about BSE disease were released in some UE countries, and consisted in a regional survey designed ad' hoc and submitted by face to face home made interviews, to collect information about consumer habits, opinions and evidences about trust in the food label. By testing the cross-country consumer's behaviours it was allowed to get evidences...

Short Chain in FVG Region: An Evaluation of the Customer Satisfaction at the “Farmer’s Shopping Points” AgEcon
Rosa, Franco.
Farmer market, farmer shops, milk dispenser, 0‐Km are some of the new born initiatives for trading agricultural products at (or near) the farm gate, now spreading in EU‐USA; their purpose is to offer to the farmers the chance to trade directly their products, and offer to the consumers new shopping opportunities alternatives to conventional food marketing outlets. This study was addressed to test the customer satisfaction at the farmers’ shops created by a farmer cooperative. The experiment was performed in Friuli VG a North‐East region of Italy, with a survey using a questionnaire submitted to a number of customers randomly selected at the end of their shopping. The customer satisfaction (CS) was evaluated with the SERQUAL procedure consisting in...

Volatility in US and Italian agricultural markets, interactions and policy evaluation AgEcon
Rosa, Franco; Vasciaveo, Michela.
The aim of this paper is to analyse the volatility and interactions among prices of agricultural commodities in Italy and US using the time series analysis. The cross market interactions are examined to test the hypothesis that the increased volatility of agricultural prices has been caused by crude oil price, then the cointegration and causality among different markets is also tested. For this analysis the spot prices of wheat, corn, soybeans in US and Italy and crude oil prices spanning from 2002 to 2010 are used. The results suggest the following considerations: i) the existence of causality in US markets with exogeneity of the oil on the US agricultural commodities, ii) evidence of cointegration between US and Italian commodities, suggesting a...

The LP Model to Optimize the Biofuel Supply Chain AgEcon
Rosa, Franco.
The heavy dependence of the EU countries from the imported oil, a growing economic vulnerability caused by wider and almost unforeseeable price changes of the crude oil commodity, the global warming are some of the reasons that have induced the policy makers to incentive the production of domestic biofuels derived from agricultural biomasses. This paper analyzes the supply chain model of biofuel production by focussing the economic and environment potential benefits that production and use of these biofuels might have for the primary sector and the society. The suggestions are that biofuels can be a promising renewable sources of energy; the positive perceived advantages are: less dependence on turbulent exporting countries, higher security from...

The Profitability of Biodiesel Chain with Different Organizations AgEcon
Rosa, Franco.
The dir 30/2003 by fixing the 5,75% target of biofuel incorporation to fossil fuel for vehicles for 2010 has increased the interest for a further development of the agro-energies in the EU and generated a virtuous competition among the Member States. Purpose of this paper is to analyze the dimension and profitability of the integrated biodiesel chain with different organizations to analyze their effectiveness in different industrial organization contest. Possible improvement of the economic performance is related with the constitution of local biofuel districts where cluster of farms producing oil seed are integrated with processors to reduce production-processing transport costs: evidences of the last 15 years suggest a decline up to 20% in current €. The...
