During the STARMER programme the submersibles Nautile and Shinkai-6500 carried out 14 dives on the NS segment of the North Fiji Basin Ridge (Station 14 at 18-degrees-50 S). From structural point of view, two types of morphology appear: in the northern part, the axis is not tectonically well expressed hut the hydrothermal activity is important. in the southern part, a graben structure 150 m wide exists, with both a.fossil and a present-day hydrothermal activity. The station 14 shows a morphostructural variability of the spreading axis which can be related to the different stages of the volcanic and tectonic cycles. Another station explored at 19-degrees-S, a few kilometres to the south, confirms the fact that different stages of tectonic and magmatic... |

Three cruises (POP 1, SEAPSO 3 and SEAPSO 4) carried out during the "Tour du Monde" of the R.V. Jean Charcot allow us to obtain new structural and geochemical data for the Okinawa, North Fiji and Lau basins. Taken together, the structural and geochemical data illustrate a difference in evolution stages of these sites. The less evolved stage is represented by the Okinawa basin, where accretion is evidence only by volcanic intrusion into a thinned continental crust. The most evolved stage is illustrated in the North Fiji basin, where the present-day accretion can be directly compared to the East Pacific Ridge. The Lau basin displays an intermediate stage with a complex system of accretionary ridges. This difference in the evolution stage is translated in the... |

The global mid-ocean ridge system, where tectonic plates diverge, is traditionally thought of as the largest single volcanic feature on the Earth. Yet, wide expanses of smooth sea floor in the easternmost part of the Southwest Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean lacks the hummocky morphology that is typical for submarine volcanism. At other slow-spreading ridges, the sea floor can extend by faulting the existing lithosphere, along only one side of the ridge axis. However, the smooth sea floor in the easternmost Southwest Indian Ridge also lacks the corrugated texture created by such faulting. Instead, the sea floor is smooth on both sides of the ridge axis and is thought to be composed of altered mantle-derived rocks. Here we use side-scan sonar to image the... |

Using a combined approach of seafloor mapping, MAPR and CTD survey, we report evidence for active hydrothermal venting along the 130°-140°E section of the poorly-known South-East Indian Ridge (SEIR) from the Australia-Antarctic Discordance (AAD) to the George V Fracture Zone (FZ). Along the latter, we report Eh and CH4 anomalies in the water column above a serpentinite massif, which unambiguously testify for ultramafic-related fluid flow. This is the first time that such circulation is observed on an intermediate-spreading ridge. The ridge axis itself is characterized by numerous off-axis volcanoes, suggesting a high magma supply. The water column survey indicates the presence of at least ten distinct hydrothermal plumes along the axis. The CH4:Mn ratios... |

The aim of the YOKOSUKA 91 cruise (October 1991) of the Japanese submersible Shinkai 6500 was to come back on two hydrothermal sites of the axis of the North Fiji Basin ridge which had already been explored by the submersible Nautile in 1989. This cruise gave us the opportunity to show that the hydrothermal manifestations vary a lot in terms of geology, geochemistry or biology during a very short time. A new site which is located in a deep graben of the N 160 ridge axis showed only activity along a fault system marked by sulphide deposits. |

A study of the seafloor in the North Fiji Basin is leading to a better understanding of the geometry and evolution of spreading in back‐arc basins. Two of the most important features of the area, the South Pandora Ridge and the Tripartite Ridge, belong to a presently active spreading system that began forming at least 7.2 m.y.a. The ridges spread at an average rate of about 1.6 cm/yr. By studying the segments of the ridges in greater detail, researchers found that each was either a “tectonic type,” with a more or less complex deep axial valley, or a “volcanic type,” with a high, rifted volcanic massif occupying the axial domain. |
