Djurmaterialets betydelse i ekologisk grisproduktion Organic Eprints
Wallenbeck, Anna; Lundeheim, Nils; Rydhmer, Lotta.

Relationships between sow and piglet traits in organic production outdoors and indoors Organic Eprints
Wallenbeck, Anna; Rydhmer, Lotta.
The aim of this study was to describe sow and piglet traits and the relationship between them in animals bred for conventional production kept in organic outdoor and indoor environments. 40 sows were studied during a seven week lactation. In parity one and three the sows farrowed outdoors (April to September) in huts and were moved to family grazing paddocks two weeks post partum (pp). In parity two and four the sows farrowed indoors (October to March) in individual pens and were moved to family pens with deep straw bedding two weeks pp. High backfat and weight loss during lactation was related to low piglet mortality and the relationship was stronger outdoors than indoors. Large litters had lower piglet growth than small litters and the relationship was...

Ovarian Activity and Oestrous Signs among Group-Housed, Lactating Sows: Influence of Behaviour, Environment and Production Organic Eprints
Hultén, Fredrik; Wallenbeck, Anna; Rydhmer, Lotta.
Animal welfare concerns require the development of housing systems that allow the animals to express their natural behaviour. One example of this is the group-housing system for lactating sows. The present study aimed at exploring ovarian activity in such a system. Thirty-eight sows farrowing individually outdoors during spring and summer, and indoors during autumn and winter, and group-housed in groups of four during weeks 3–7 of the lactation period, were monitored regarding reproductive functions, behaviour and production during their first to fourth lactation period. Average ovulation frequency during lactation was 47%. Only 50% of these ovulating cases were accompanied by a standing oestrus. Lactational ovulation frequency was higher in later parities...

Breeding Goals for Organic Dairy Farming in Denmark Based on the Principles of Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Slagboom, Margot; Wallenbeck, Anna; Rydhmer, Lotta; Thomasen, Jørn Rind; Kargo, Morten.
Organic dairy farming (ODF) is different from conventional dairy farming in management practices, but so far the same breeding goal (BG) is used, based on the same economic models (EM). However, ODF is based on the principles of organic agriculture defined by the IFOAM, which are not easily interpreted in economic terms and it may be questionable to use a BG for ODF based on EM. In this study we set up three BGs for ODF in Denmark, one based on the principles of organic agriculture, one focusing on roughage consumption and feed efficiency, and one focusing on disease resistance. A questionnaire and desired gains index were used to set up the BGs. Correlations between these BGs and BGs based on EM were low. Which BG would be best suitable to use for ODF in...

Tuning up sustainable organic animal production Organic Eprints
Rydhmer, Lotta; Slagboom, Margot.
In this report, within the track “Tuning up sustainable organic production”, we highlight sustainability assessments and the choice of breeding goals as opportunities for improvement. We also discuss goal conflicts and small-scale effects of organic production.
