Productivity and N-leaching in organic dairy grass-arable crop rotations Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J; Askegaard, M; Søegaard, K.
Due to increasing size of Danish organic dairy farms uniform grazing of all cropped land becomes inexpedient due to long distance to the milking facilities. We investigated nutrient dynamics and feed production in two dairy crop rotations with internal differences in proportion of grazing and cutting. One six year crop rotation represents close to the farm buildings (barley [Hordeum vulgare L.] undersown with grass-clover [Lolium perenne L.–Trifolium repens L.] - 4 years of grass-clover - spring barley/catch crop) and another represents further away (barley undersown with grass-clover, 2 years of grass-clover -barley/catch crop - maize [Zea mays L.]/catch crop - lupin [Lupinus angustifolius]/catch crop). In each of the crop rotations was made five...

Forbs enhance productivity of unfertilised grass-clover leys and support low-carbon bioenergy Organic Eprints
Cong, W-F; Jing, J; Rasmussen, J; Søegaard, K; Eriksen, J.
Intensively managed grasslands are dominated by highly productive grass-clover mixtures. Increasing crop diversity by inclusion of competitive forbs may enhance biomass production and sustainable biofuel production. Here we examined if one or all of three forbs (chicory, Cichorium intybus L.; caraway, Carum carvi L.; plantain, Plantago lanceolata L.) included in ryegrass-red clover mixtures enhanced above- and below-ground productivity, and assessed their biofuel potentials, based on a three-year experiment with and without fertilisation as cattle slurry. We determined herbage yield, standing root biomass, and estimated methane energy output and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per energy unit using life cycle assessment. Results showed that...

Dry matter yield, chemical composition and estimated extractable protein of legume and grass species during the spring growth Organic Eprints
Solati, Z; Jørgensen, U; Eriksen, J; Søegaard, K.
BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the variation of extractable protein amount in legumes and grasses as affected by harvest time is important for identifying optimal combinations to enable a high protein production in a biorefinery. The extractability of protein was estimated using the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System across six harvests during the spring growth. RESULTS: The estimated extractable protein [g kg−1 dry matter (DM)] defined as the easily available fractions B1+B2 was significantly higher in white clover and lucerne at all harvests while, if the more cell wall attached fraction B3 can be extracted, white clover had the highest extractable protein amongst all species. Total yield of B1+B2 per ha was higher in white clover and red clover at...

Species diversity effects on productivity, persistence and quality of multispecies swards in a four-year experiment Organic Eprints
Jing, J; Søegaard, K; Cong, W-F; Eriksen, J..
Plant species diversity may benefit natural grassland productivity, but its effect in managed grassland systems is not well understood. A four-year multispecies grassland experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of species diversity legumes and non-leguminous forbs on productivity, persistence and sward quality under cutting or grazing regimes and with or without slurry application. Three mixtures were established± 3-mix: grass, red and white clover, 10-mix: 3-mix plus birdsfoot trefoil and six non-leguminous forbs, and 12-mix: 10-mix plus lucerne and festulolium. Species diversity increased sward production and yield persistence under cutting regime. The 12-mix had the highest yield from the second year onwards and no statistically significant...

Highly productive forage legume stands show no positive biodiversity effect on yield and N2-fixation Organic Eprints
Dhamala, NR; Eriksen, J; Carlsson, G; Søegaard, K; Rasmussen, J.
Background and aims While N2-fixation in diversified grasslands including forage legumes and non-legumes has been widely studied, N2-fixation in swards containing only forage legumes remains unclear. In this study, we investigated N2-fixation in pure stands and mixtures of three forage legumes. Methodology N2-fixation, dry matter (DM) and nitrogen (N) yields were quantified in a field experiment for red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) pure stands and mixtures using the isotope dilution method. Results All three forage legume species derived most (around 85%) of their N from atmospheric N2-fixation (%Ndfa). However, no positive effect of species diversity was found in any of the mixtures....

N transfer in three-species grass-clover mixtures with chicory, ribwort plantain or caraway Organic Eprints
Dhamala, NR; Rasmussen, J; Carlsson, G; Søegaard, K; Eriksen, J.
Background and aims There is substantial evidence that legume-derived Nitrogen (N) is transferred to neighboring non-legumes in grassland mixtures. However, there is sparse information about how deep rooted nonlegume forage herbs (forbs) influence N transfer in multi-species grasslands. Methodology Red clover (Trifolium pretense L.) was grown together with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and one of three forb species: chicory (Cichoriumintybus L.), ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) or caraway (Carum carvi L.) in a field experiment. During the first year after the establishment, red clover leaves were labeled with 15N-urea to determine the N transfer from red clover to companion ryegrass and forbs. Results On an annual basis, up to 15...

Short-term residual N unaffected by forbs in grass-clover mixtures Organic Eprints
Dhamala, NR; Rasmussen, J; Cong, WF; Carlsson, G; Søegaard, K; Eriksen, J.
We determined the effect on residual nitrogen (N) of including forbs (chicory, ribwort plantain and caraway) in perennial ryegrass-red clover mixtures. Although soil N inputs during the grassland phase differed markedly between mixtures, in a pot experiment we found no differences in the potentially mineralizable N of the soil or in the dry matter production and N content of the spring barley test crop. The fertilizer value of the grassland mixtures corresponded to 10 g N/m2, irrespective of forb inclusion. Thus, the inclusion of nonlegume forbs did not negatively affect short-term residual N fertility of legume-based grasslands.

Diversity promotes production of ryegrass-clover leys through inclusion of competitive forb species Organic Eprints
Cong, W-F; Søegaard, K; Eriksen, J.
Highly productive temporary grasslands in Europe are usually composed of only a few plant species, and are typically dominated by perennial ryegrass-clover mixtures. Including additional competitive forb species holds potential for enhancing productivity in temporary grasslands, but requires further demonstration. In a grassland biodiversity experiment, one or all of the three forb species: chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), caraway (Carum carvi L.) and plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.), were grown in different proportions with the perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)-red clover (Trifolium pratense L.)mixture under two slurry application levels (0 and 250 kg total N ha-1 year-1). Dry matter (DM) yield and botanical composition were determined in 2014 and...

Nitrogen fixation in red clover grown in multi-species mixtures with ryegrass, chicory, plantain and caraway Organic Eprints
Dhamala, NR; Rasmussen, J; Carlsson, G; Søegaard, K; Eriksen, J.
While many studies have investigated effects of species composition and management on N2-fixation dynamics in simple clover-grass mixtures, there is a lack of knowledge about the performance of legumes and their N2-fixation in more species-rich grassland including non-legume forbs. This study investigated N2-fixation and total N yield in grassland mixtures including different combinations of red clover, perennial ryegrass and three deep rooted forbs: chicory, ribwort plantain and caraway, managed without and with slurry application. The percentage of clover N derived from atmosphere (%Ndfa) increased in mixtures, but was unaffected by inclusion of forbs. However, forbs affected the quantity of N2-fixation and total N yield by affecting the red clover...

Biogas potential from forbs and grass-clover mixture with the application of near infrared spectroscopy Organic Eprints
Wahid, R; Ward, AJ; Møller, HB; Søegaard, K; Eriksen, J.
This study investigated the potentials of forbs; caraway, chicory, red clover and ribwort plantain as substrates for biogas production. One-, two- and four-cut systems were implemented and the influence on dry matter yields, chemical compositions and methane yields were examined. The two- and four-cut systems resulted in higher dry matter yields (kg [total solid, TS] ha-1) compared to the one-cut system. The effect of plant compositions on biogas potentials was not evident. Cumulative methane yields (LCH4 kg-1 [volatile solid, VS]) were varied from 279 to 321 (chicory), 279 to 323 (caraway), 273 to 296 (ribwort plantain), 263 to 328 (red clover) and 320 to 352 (grass-clover mixture), respectively. Methane yield was modelled by modified Gompertz equation...
